Guy that builds my transmissions says that if you are a good transmission builder you should have no problem building a TH350. May be a little hard to get parts quickly but just not that big a deal. Hydromatic's are found all over the world. I think at one time they were used in Rolls Royce autos.
it seems that most guys that own and work on american cars over here do their own as anyone who knows how to work on them in the trade want mega bucks and would rather replace than repair you must have garages like that
You can install the 200R4 if you have it already and the TH350 is on the out. The 200R4 has a better 1st gear so that will be noticeable and when you want to do some 70 plus mph driving then you will have overdrive! If you decide to eventually change the rear gear to a 3.42:1 or better you can have O/D at around 45 mph with 1-3 as performance gearing when you are in a hurry. So I say go for it, you'll like 1st and 2nd gear better than what the TH350 has slightly better on the hills as well. Even if you keep the TH350 you should probably look into getting better rear gearing for the car because those 2.56:1 really suck! GL Derek
sounds like a plan i just need to work out what extra bits i need , like will the filler tube from the th350 fit ? or do i have to order another , and do i need a special torque convertor lock up kit or can i wire up what is already fitted to the standard box ?
little more info the trans is [h=3]1984 monte carlo ss looks like the lock up was controlled by the ecu in the monte is it easy to wire so i get lock up in 3rd and 4th ? and i am looking at getting a large trans cooler is the a good size to go for ? or is it a case of bigger is better ?[/h]
