Got the new chrome pen in the mail today and now I know where to buy them locally. A little pricey but still the next best thing for chrome detail work; even the judges and librarians are impressed! The 2mm was like 12 bux, and itll be good for the dash stuff. I have 3 male dogs and a set 0f 30 year old Cragar SS wheels that need a few "dots" repaired, other wise they are really nice wheels.
The test pattern here is done on the chrome frame on a swingline stapler from the chinaman. Its still not chrome, but its better than silver or chrome aluminum. The pics are with and without flash, and that exaggerates the finish somewhat. Nice on the dash edges or just a dull spot on a wheel or a bumper, you decide. ws

Not bad! I've got a 1 inch chunk of chrome missing on the Riv's rear bumper that I have no idea what happened (they were rechromed before I bought it and came to me with the damage). Been debating on which product to use, didn't want to just rattle some Mexi-chrome on it. That looks presentable enough to where no one's going to spot it.

The only app. problem Ive seen, even on a lot of youtubes, is that you need to put it on pretty wet. Its not like a marker pen, so it has a tendency to sag a bit. Its alchohol based and does dry pretty fast, but if its on a vertical part, I'd paint "up" and maybe give it 2-3 coats drying in between each one. If the chrome is down to the nickel plating, just do it. If its a rust spot (read:ruff), polish the spot with some sandpaper on your thumb is a circular fashion to smoothen it out. Nothing to lose eh? Ive got a few spots on the font bumper of the XGS where someone in the past changed out a battery and dribbled some acid across the top of the bumper. Acid eats chrome so that's just nickel showing there. let me know how it works. That's unless I beat ya to it! ws

Says they're available at Wally World doing a Google search, so I'm going to swing by the two here in town after work and see if I can round one up. I'll need to sand it, as it is to bare metal with some surface rust. Figure I'll mask around the spot first. Thanks for the painting up tip, I'll give it a go when I get a chance and post. If they don't have them here locally, I'll order one up tomorrow.

Go to Hobby Lobby and use the weekly 40% off coupon for one item at regular price ... you can get it for about $7 or so.

Depending on the size of the spot, you may consider masking it completely, then taking something steel and round and sharp (even a razor blade) and slicing a clean hole over the repair area. Avoid masking a square hole,; less edge to show. I'm a big fan of DIY stuff, and have had to spot repair paint on boats and cars etc, and have taken a fuzzy towel, folded it into fourths, the cut a hole in the center, then unfold it and make it really wet with water. Its enough to stick FLAT to the area, and let dry. Itll give a fluffy edge to the paint which is really easy to blend with wet paper or buff smooth. Just sayin' in case you wanted to try and airbrush the spot in. What can I say... I'm El Cheapo! ws

From my experience using them in modelling, I doubt they'll be durable enough for exterior use. They are good for things chrome lines on dashboards and the dash vent.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though.

I cant tell yet, but even as camouflage on a black rust spot on a wheel or a bumper has to be less noticeable. Whats to lose if even every year or two another dab will cover it up. JMOHO. A year from now Ill pull this thred back up for some feedback. For now, silver paint just don't get it... ws

Hey, something with the time stamp on this Board is off. Check your own stated time of post after you post. Mine routinely 5 or 6 hours off .... showing like I'm on the Board in the middle of the night when I'm actually sawing a log.

Hate to say it but rack time is generally 2230hrs and reveille is around 0300. After a few days of this I shut down for a good 2-3 hour nap. Always had trouble sleeping through, and that's after 2 alprazolam 1mg's and a 6.0 stout beer. What I don't get is I have 3 cups of java per day, and a slice of cheese with morning meds, then nothing all day while bustin' noodles on the boat job or house chores until dinnertime and that's regularly chicken or fish parts, and I'm lucky if I lose a pound a month, not to mention the gastric bypass I had in '05. Lost 200lbs then and found 100 of it back in the closet. Just had to quit worrying about it. Carpe Diem!
BTW its 1615hrs right now. ws

You're just an hour later than my time zone....I usually roll out about 5:30 A.M. here. Workdays, weekends, no matter if it's 2200 or 0300 when I get to bed, sober or stinking drunk, always out at 0530-0600. Can't stand to waste the day. Back on topic....this stuff is unobtanium here in Zootown, so I'm going to have to just order it. I've spent probably $20 in gas trying to find it to save the $5 in shipping cost from ordering online. Hobby Lobby ended up being Hobby Town here, and they never heard of it....Oh, well, at least I drove my Caddy to all the different stores with the A/C going and all 4 windows down on the hardtop.

I'm blessed that my wife likes to shop and never lets me down. Hell, she even brought several used trucks home for me to look at before when I was knee deep in the Buick job. Bought a 2008 Silverado. She shopped on line for me too and finally found the real deal on Amazonia. Town for us is 10 miles away so she's saved my neck a bunch of times! This is one of them deals where yer gonna hafta bite the bullet. The store-boughts hate the taste of lead LOL.. Now on to some regular screw in base 12 Volt 40 watt bulbs for the cabin of my boat. They look like regular bulbs. Finally busted a 1963 filament today. YIKES! Pointers appreciated; maybe some RV places ws

Friday afternoon, I got to use the new chrome pen before the car show. Laying on the ground face into the rims, I could tell the rust has increased over the last few years. I think this winter Ill take the dremel and lay each wheel flat on a spinner and make the half-fast resto job on the chrome. Itll be a more concise finish than trying spot it in with dabs, especially upside down (overhead). I think the results are acceptable tho... ws
