Megasquirt Guys- Is it worth converting my 455 to fuel control only or 850 Demon Carb

    Guys

I'm looking to fuel inject my Skylark using megasquirt 2 using low pressure TBI. The altitude varies so much in the Salt Lake Valley that I think the injection might be the way to go.

I'm looking at using the 454 TBI from xtremefi http://www.ebay.com/itm/454-350-GM-TBI-54mm-BBC-tbody-850cfm-Truck-SUV-Z28-TA-/370322499011?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item5638f0e5c3
It is supposed to flow 850 cfm

Then use the transdapt quadrajet to TBI adapter plate http://www.jegs.com/i/Trans+Dapt/969/2209/10002/-1?CAWELAID=1710572209&catargetid=1784155798&cadevice=c&&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CKHA95CUirgCFaU5QgodzSUA1w

I would junkyard the pigtails and order new sensors from the low TBI fuel pressure 454. I'm looking a set of 85 lb injectors also.

Or would it be better just to punt and buy a 850 demon carb.

What do you guys think? I made a post like this a while back but I' in a much better money situation now.

not sure about the measquirt, but I absolutely love my MSD atomic EFI. if you can affors the upgrade I guarantee you will love it. check out my build thread for more info.

I would not for a stock'ish TBI. Also what kind of mileage are you driving the car every year? I put 10,000-15,000 miles on my Buick a year (and use several functions of the megasquirt and like to tinker and experiment with stuff), so I find it worth it. If you are only driving it on the weekends, I'd just punt the Demon for some other carb. If you aren't looking for a complex install the MSD Atomic TBI and others may be what you are looking for.

I have a BIG holley 2-bbl TBI on my Thunderbird and it struggles to keep the wore out stock 428 engine fueled at WOT even with ~20psi of fuel pressure. But I did install it for around $1000 =P I'll eventually get an aluminum multi-port intake for the FE and upgrade the hardware while keeping the MegaSquirt and 90% of the wiring the same.

Make sure the MS will accept changes in altitude without having to cycle the key off and on, I don't think it will. Otherwise stay with the carb. Here's an example of what I mean. http://efi101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8128

    Well,

I didn't see anyone post in this for a while so I pulled the trigger on a megasquirt 1 and lc1 wideband being the patient guy that thinks things through haha :pp:cool:. I ordered a ported 454 throttle body from RV morse. It's a little bigger than the holley two barrel
I'm going to use an 89 ford EFI pump for fuel.

I'm in my setup about 850 so far.
I'm an electronics/computer guy at work so I like the tuneability and control of the megasquirt over other systems.

I think the most tedious part is going to be plumbing the fuel system because the lack of heat shields etc . Any tips for this would be great. I figure if the TBI doesn't work out, I might have to go multiport later.

    Silverbuick,
Does the Thunderbird have much better drive-ability? That is what I'm looking for mostly as I haul my two boys around it this thing. Not looking to have the fastest car on the planet.

You are probably right... I will get it put together and I will see if I need to upgrade from there.

The 89 Ford pump might be a bit much for a throttle body unless you are going to run secondary fuel pressure regulator to down drop it some first. I believe these TBI's want no more than ~22psi of fuel pressure and that Ford pump supposedly goes up to 90'ish (I run two of them on my Buick 455).

The TBI starts and idles a TON better than I ever got the AutoLeak to work. I have some throttle linkage geometry issues on the T-bird that require a very light touch on the throttle, but you likely wouldn't have that issue on the Buick. I think it's a GM to Ford problem. But in general it drives pretty well just can't seem to get enough fuel at WOT. Maybe it needs more fuel pressure??

Your concern was the altitude. Does the MS compensate for that automatically? I don't think so as it doesn't have a secondary MAP sensor so it can't. Good luck with that. And the Innovate is slow and inaccurate, especially when coupled to EFI. There are better ones out there, sorry.

Here is an update.. Some good and bad news . Bad news is I can't get the megasquirt to communicate via the serial cable but the tbi fits like it belongs on the car. The porting on the TBI is way bigger than a stock 454 tbi. I had to clearance the transdapt adapter plate a lot to clear the throttle blades.

I will post another update when it happens.....

Well some good news.. The ms1 is on my test bench and it is good to go.. swapping the throttle cable. The one from a 90 caprice is looking very promising. I'm just mocking it up now

I had to do the same thing on mine, and because it was a squarebore Ford intake I had to install a Q-jet to square bore adapter under it because the throttle blades tagged the intake manifold's sides. Double check that yours can go to WOT without hitting the intake manifold.

No issues with WOT and the manifold
