"This is the only surviving example personally driven by Ferdinand Porsche,” the evening’s emcee said, then announced that bidding would open at “$30 million,” a figure that was written on the front media screen of the auction theater. Half of the crowd laughed; the other half cheered. After rapid bidding up to “$70 million,” with the crowd on its feet, iPhones raised, and cheering, the auctioneer announced that he said “$17 million,” rather than "$70 million." The media screen was quickly changed to reflect the $17 million sum.

Boos and shocked yelps and shouts ensued. People walked out.

“What a joke,” said Johnny Shaughnessy, a collector from Southern California, who was in the room when it happened. “They just lost so much credibility. My father could have bought that car for $5 million years ago. It has been passed around for years, and no one wants it.”

“As bidding opened on the Type 64, increments were incorrectly displayed on the screen, causing unfortunate confusion in the room,...….”

This car is a Volkswagen, not a Porsche. The Porsche car company was founded ten years after this car was built.

Ferdinand Porsche was working on multiple car designs before Porsche the company was technically formed. This car is a unique piece, in many ways, like the GM "Dream Cars" were - the Buick "Y - Job" be one example, in that they were design and engineering exercises while they were running and driving promotional value. That said, almost anything 911 is rapidly increasing in value now and this car, partial VW underpinnings, or not, has early "Porsche" DNA to some degree. I had read somewhere that in some ways, this little Porsche was a partial proof of concept in terms of showing in 3 dimensions - and running and driving - what ideas Dr. Porsche had.

    1972Mach1 Just some M.M.O.G. guy.....

I read that it was the first car to have the word "Porsche" on it. I'm sure to the man who made it, it was a Porsche.

The word Porsche was added years after the car was built. It is basically a rebodied VW. The Porsche company has said emphatically that it is not a Porsche, and I doubt seriously that it could be registered or titled as such.
