I was unaware that it is a non numbers matching car. I do stand by my statement that if it is not a car to be driven, it would increase in value to put it away and hold it for 10 years. I believe the reason it keeps dropping in price, as do many others, is because it has gone to market over and over and over again. You think the bullitt mustang, as an extreme example, would go for 3.4 million dollars the 5th or 6th time it went to auction in the matter of a few years? I don't think so. Same concept here on a smaller scale.

And I didn't mean that to be offensive at all toward you Ryan. Just my opinion..... And this isn't meant to be offensive to anybody either, but the line that young guys aren't into Buicks is proven false every day by the guys posting on this forum. There's plenty of them 40 and under, even 25 and under, that are into them. And that's not going to change. The fact they're on a forum with a bunch of "geezers" asking questions and building cars themselves instead of hanging on facebook should warm your heart and put that notion to rest. Theres plenty more out there building them that aren't on this forum. I know 2 myself.

No offense taken at all Lucas. I alway like people expressing themselves about the passion they have for the Buicks. I also don't mean any offense with my opinion its just my opinion nothing more. :)

Ryan - while I agree with your general premise, I'm not sure this car and the Stage II are necessarily good examples of it. We've seen both cars show up at auction again and again over the last couple years. Early in that time frame they got but didn't take six figure bids. Perhaps the bids weren't real but there was much higher money for these cars recently. Now as I type this, could 2017-18 have been the peak for most of the '60s/'70s muscle cars? Quite possibly given as you note the interest in different cars with some of the younger generation. Let's be honest, the newer stuff is faster*, more comfortable, handle better, have more creature comforts and are safer. And those interested in the older stuff are fewer in number every day. And Lucas, yes I agree that there are more younger people interested in these cars every day but not enough to replace what we are losing. And will they be willing to pay more for them in 15-20 years than we paid now? If one got in to the hobby early enough (20-25 yeats ago) maybe.

*Maybe not in a straight line, but throw in a turn or two...

In order to get these youngster's into Buicks ya gotta take them for a ride in one which is difficult because there isn't many around at local car shows to begin with.
Once you have been in the passenger seat of a torque monster and your feet are firmly pressed up against the floorboards it's a feeling that you won't forget.

I find it interesting that Mecum posts what the car sold for PLUS the 10% commission on the site. Here is a example of what I am talking about. The price they bid the Bullet mustang to was 3.4 million but they post that it sold for 3.74 Million (Thats with commission) Only reason I dont like this is when you look at what the cars sell for you have to back off the commission and you have to also back off the commission that the seller has to pay. This just shows you Mecum is making a freaking mint off these cars going across the block and the seller sometimes is really getting screwed. Just think about the seller that sold the 71 Green Stage1. Posted it sold for $41,800 but after you back out the 10% buyer premium and the sellers 10% fee's (5% if no reserve) the seller only got something like $33,858. Cant tell me that didn't hurt to take that kind of hit on a car that was documented on here and a really nice restoration. Also think of the fee's it cost the seller to put the car in the auction, Transportation of the car and themselves, Hotel, ect ect. The seller really is probably not happy if they take the time to really add up the cost of selling at Mecum.

Ryan, the seller only had to pay his 10%. So let's say it sold at 40k for simple math, the seller "only" has to give 4k. So he goes away with 36k. The buyer also has to pay their share, so they also give 4k and have to give 44k total. But yes, the auction house makes a mint.

I believe that in 9 of 10 cases, sitting on an old car will not net you a profit VS some other monetary investment.

It's hard to enjoy a paper statement every month VS a smokey burnout however.

I should have explained better what I meant was as you say a 40k car you pay 4K in fees for the sale but what I meant to add in was the cost of shipping from Canada to Florida as well as hotel, entrance fee, and other costs really didn’t net him all that much. Your correct on your math I just had a bunch running in my head and didn’t explain my thoughts well lol. Damn old age and CRS lol

Does anyone know who bought any of these cars? I hope some will find their way into more long term, members' hands. I'm particularly interested in knowing where the red/white '70 convert, the J&B Stage 2, and the prototype car went.

Alain made a costly mistake taking his beautiful 71 GS to Mecum and ended up selling in the 30's. Plus all the expenses to bring it down there...yikes. I tried to purchase a few months back and offered in the high 40's. I tried to explain that the market has really changed and my offer was fair....he gave me the brush off...he was not interested. Yea...I was annoyed that he decided to sell at Mecum but it was his car, his decision. To be honest I was a bit pissed off that he was not willing to negotiate from his original price in the 50's. I ended up getting another car that i am very happy with, but I would have liked to get his. Sour grapes on my side...but sellers should take note that the market has definetly changed.
