theres an audio shop just down the street from me that sells crown amps as well as all the JBL stuff crown amps are VERY nice spound is excellent if you want to take a small loan out just for your audio system?? I would consider myself to be knowledgeable in the caraudio field (not an expert) most of the time my ears conflict with my wallet the nice thing is you really don't have to spend $3500 on an amp to like the sound and power it produces...i mentioned a few in an above post all witnin a great price range that also perform very well!!! since we're in the expensive amp mood how about carver?? all i can say is go to several real caraudio shops and have a listen more times than note the real shop will have the amp running at it's peak!!!

What do you think of these specs...

Dual Fully Regulated MOSFET Power Supplies
RUBI (Rapid-Use Branched Impulse) proprietary power supply topology
STACT (STabilized Apex Current Topology) Reduces power supply stress by 50%
    Trident amplifier protection topology
Auto High CurrentT Matches the amplifier for virtually every load
    application
ChassisinkT Transistors are located between circuit board and heatsink for optimal heat dissipation
Variable Input level controls for exact input match to amplifier
    Continuously variable 24dB low-pass crossover (40Hz to 220Hz)
    Continuously variable 12dB high-pass crossover (50Hz to 200Hz)
Hawkins Bass ControlT Proprietary bass equalization topology
Harmonic Bass AlignmentT Produces tighter and more accurate bass reproduction
Continuously variable subsonic filter (13Hz to 30Hz)
IDIT (Intelligent Distress Indicator) gives visual conformation of protection status
Balanced Line inputs for the highest level of noise rejection
    Platinum RCA input and output
    Platinum 4 gauge power inputs
    10Hz - 30 kHz frequency response
    >100dB S/N ratio
    0.02% THD
    6 Channels
    RMS @ 4 ohm 65 x 5 + 200 x 1
    RMS @ 2 ohm 100 x 5 + 400 x 1
    RMS @ 1 ohm 500 x 1 (sub only)
    Dimensions: 19" x 11.5" x 2.25"

This is on a SOUNDSTREAM D'ARTAGNAN 5.1 6 CHANNEL 800W CAR AUDIO AMP. Has anyone seen this one perform? AL.

as i say, i'm not that up on the car audio market, i can mostly help with general principles.

as far as the Soundstream goes, they've got a lot of cool acronyms (most of the manufacterers do) ... but i don't know that it's actually setting them that much apart from everyone else. ALL the good manufacturers have tech for power supply management, etc. throwing a bunch of capital letters at how you do it doesn't make your way any better ... or really any different.

i question the applicability of a 5.1 surround system in a automobile. maybe if you've got a minivan and you're pacifying the kids with a 19" LCD screen showing movies? otherwise, i see absolutely NO POINT in a center front mono speaker or rear delay sound effects. i suppose that makes me provincial. :spank:

i was pointing out the spec items in the post above more as a means of sorting out the chaff. there can still be significant differences in sound between 'name' manufacturers and even within the same brand. nothing will substitute for listening to a good demo. you can let your salesman supply you with a demo but you should also take one of your personal cd's that will stretch a system and with which you are very familiar.

Al - I finally heard back on the McIntosh amps.

The only one available that my friend knows of is an MC 427. Looks to be a 100x2 amp. He's asking $250.......supposed to retail over $500.

From what I've found, McIntosh amps have a very low distortion rate - .005% THD was what I found.

    Sounstream 6 Channel

Boston makes a very nice product. I did the same as you did and the THD was no where to be seen. And do to the fact this is my main objective that number is important. Have you or any one veiwing this thread had any expereance with this amplifier? AL.
