A column shift GSX? Not to give him any more credit than deserved, but that has to be pretty dang rare. I think the person who ordered it must have been smoking the same stuff :eek2: It would be a cool car to have just for the column shift and consolette, but I don't know about 45k cool....

I know Dave Kleiner, and he's a nice guy. But is that why it's 45K? Has anyone seen Larry Miller's cars? Dave Kleiner has nothing on Larry I'll tell you. Not to take anything away from Dave. Obviously I'm sure the car is beautiful anyway, but even so, the engine IS NOT rebuilt, just detailed. For 45K the engine better have been gone through with a fine tooth comb IMHO.

Chris, the column shift is auto not clutch, just in case you were confused. :beer

I had always been under the impression that all GSX's were 455 Stage 1 cars.

    Man, Thats alota dough.

70 GSX's were available only with a 455 with the Stage 1 package optional. in 71 i believe the gsx went to being a 'trim line' and was available on any car with any engine.

I don't see anywhere where column shift is listed :Do No:

No 1970 GSX had a column shift.

Something is worth what another person is willing will pay for it. :Smarty:

STG 1 was an option, even on the X cars.

I highly doubt it is a auto with a column shift, as part of the GSX package was black buckets w/Full length console, if you specified an auto trans, but I guess anything is possible, back then. Similar to the 71/72 converts, with bucket seats.. if you knew someone, you could SCO order it. I have learned... Never say "it can't be that", regarding what the factory may have produced, because a lot of times, it's a sure way to get egg on your face.

If your really interested to know, call up Dave Kliner, I am quite sure he would remember a column shifted GSX.

I think the owner might be a little fuzzy on the difference between a console, and a consolette.

If the car is what he says it is, then 45 K is not too far out of line, for a frame off resto, on 76 thousand mile, white GSX. I'm quite sure he has up to twice that much money in it.

But the ad is kinda vauge.

Yeah Ken, My 70 GS455 is an auto on the column (that was the standard configuration), I just thought it kind of strange to see that on a GSX.

    i love it!!!!!!!!

I love seeing these kind of prices coming up on gsx cars. It's about time our cars get the kind of prices that other muscle cars have been commanding for a while. I've seen even higher prices on chevelles and know one seems to think that they are out of line. And they don't hold a candle to the quality of a real nice gs. I used to have a '70 ss 396 chevelle ( I sold it to a local chevy dealer who gave it away in a radio ad campaign) and I like the gs cars much better. Besides, this kind of publicity just makes all of "our" gsx's more valuable don't you think? Just a few thoughts on the price subject.

Well Im not going to start a war but I have seen Larrys cars and I had a Dave Kleiner resto on my GSX. When parked side by side my car was 40 times the GSX Larry had in the show at BG that year. Just for example my GSX had the correct bolts in and around my car and Larrys GSX had new hardware store bolts instead. Paint and body work were fairly close so no difference there, but in the detail department Daves job was hands down far better than Larrys.

Thats great that our cars are getting up their in value but it also puts one out of reach for many of us. Myself I could never afford to purchase one for that kind of money.

I just talked to Dave and it is not a column shift. The "consollette as advertized is a console. Dave also said it was one of the best cars he ever started to restore. The carpet and interior was so nice he just cleaned it and reinstalled it. :eek2:

    Anyway there are the facts.

And to think I only paid $4,000 for mine in January 1985. Seemed like a lot of dough then when I was a college student. But at least I had my priorities correct! :Brow:

Jim, if you look at the info in the upper right hand corner of the auction where it lists the milage etc, you'll see it says "automatic" next to transmission. I think all the confusion started when Yardley described it as a "column shift" when what he really probably meant was that it wasn't a 4 speed......

    Sorry :Do No:

    No war taken. :beer

I was kind of referring to the body work myself, I never really noticed the bolts he was using but would venture to guess they were not his final choice in hardware and that he probably didn't have the correct ones at the time. There's no way Larry would be satisfied with anything less than perfect. 40 times the GSX? Geez, I like you Mike, but come on. While you have a beautiful car Mike, Larry's won his share of firsts as well and you can't forget that Dave does this for a living and I've seen what Kleiner cars sell for which means an incredible amount of cash was spent in the resto, so I would not expect hardware store grade bolts in there anyway, but I'm no expert, so if it's the bolts that make it 40 times better than I guess it is. .:Do No: I'll just stifle it now. :Dou:

I put "automatic" and "consolette" together and deciphered my answer. In all the GM cars I've ever seen, that meant a column shift. The guy should have posted pictures, or been more accurate in his description. Even still, for a non-AC, crank window car it seems high to me. I'll take a new Cobra for that price - and dump the extra 5 grand into my Riv.

I know I said I was going to stifle, but I forgot one important point. I don't know how many cars you have or had Mike, but Larry has a huge amount of cars and he doesn't always bring the nicest ones to the Nats, he just likes to mix it up and drive them all. It's very possible yours was the nicest one there that year. While he frequently comes away with trophies, he sincerely could care less about it, if you hang around with the guy at all he's just there for the fun of it. :TU: Me too for that matter, I love all Buicks in all shapes and sizes and in all conditions!

BTW, have you seen all Larry's cars and which particular X did he have there that year?

we saw the car in person about 2 weeks ago. the car is better than when it came off the assy. line. it is about the most perfect car i have ever seen. we could not find a single flaw in the car. if you want a car to push in and out a trailer and be afraid to drive this is it. im not trying to sell the car for the guy but he does have a beautiful car. if i was into not driving my cars and had an extra 45k lying around id buy it. i always liked the white x's.

Ken let me give you some history of me. I have been attending the GS NAts since 1983 so yes I have seen most if not all of Larrys cars over the years. I also have had my share of cars too. I dont make them all show cars but the one I did do as a show car it was a $55K investment and it was as perfect as you can get one!! I have currently 13 Buicks 5 are GS's Most of them are for sale too.

I am not slamming LM's cars at all he has one of the nicest 67s I have ever seen. But without going into all the details I can produce countless witnesses to my GSX vs LMs car quality the year in question. Larrys yellow GSX may be better now how would I know I never go to the show area anymore. And it seems that my car was not counted in the vote that year becuase of a technicallity. I went to the club officials and was told tuff S--- so I never will show again ever!. I went and counted the ballots and I was 2nd place by over 100 votes with my GSX and Dempseys white GSX was 1st in a sea of yellow cars. Anyway back to the subject At the time I was looking at the GSX at BG in the year in question There is no way that GSX was as good as mine at that time.
AND one more thing I sold my GSX a year ago for $40K to someone in New Jersey. So the rest of this conversation is about weather Dave Kleiner is as good as Larry doing restos........ Im biased in that but I think Dave Kleiners cars have won their share of the 1st place trophies too...... I have a pile of them! My car won 1st place or best of show everytime out except the one year at BG when I got dumped out over BS.

The only thing I worry about now is WHO IS THE FASTEST!! ANd since I have no money it will never be me ..................

If an LS6 Chevelle can bring in 100K, and my friends 396 powered 0 option 67 Chevelle is worth 30K, then I am glad to see a GSX get some decent money. It should be more than that anyway.

Maybe if the cars were worth more than the sum of their parts more would get restored instead of parted out and we would have a market and some real repro parts out there....

    later
