Is there a way to figure out what your compression ratio (8.5-1 9.0-1) will be after adding boost?

Your static compression ratio does not change with boost. It's a simple mathematic statement describing the ratio between volume above the piston at TDC and BDC. You could be cranking your engine over in the vacuum of space and the compression ratio would remain the same.

Website with automotive calculators galore (Re: math time!)

    Dear V-8 Buick fans,

For those of you not familiar with this website:

    http://www.wallaceracing.com/Calculators.htm

There are all sorts of calculators here, from drag racing stuff, to engine and drive train design computations, to octane.

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

Devon is correct. The static compression ratio will not change, however the dynamic compression ratio will. The Wallace Racing page has a nice calculator for that. For a pump gas friendly motor, you'd probably want a DCR around 8.25:1, and certainly no more than 8.5:1.

Are you asking; What compression ratio does the engine need for a certain boost so it doesn't detonate on pump gas?
The answer to this involves things like cam profile, intercooling, type of supercharger, fuel type and a few other considerations.

Or are you simply wanting to know what the effective CR is for a given static CR for a given boost.
If so Edouard and Andy are referring you to this calculator.

I know nothing about supercharging except that there's 2 different types of superchargers and what they are. I want to learn more so if you guys can point me in the right direction I'll make like a sponge and suck it up. Lol I'm mainly looking into using a roots type for a low boost situation. Nothing extream as far as boosting goes.

What size engine are you looking at supercharging?

350 Buick. With an automatic if it makes a difference.

The 350 has a sturdy bottom end.
The down side of the 350 is it's the only Buick V8 that does not have an off the shelf blower intake manifold as far as I know.
Dyers may be a possibility. I will call and check.
Also Hogan's will fabricate one but they are expensive. http://www.hogansracingmanifolds.com/
With ported heads and around 6 lbs of boost 500 hp should be easy

Can you do any of your own manifold fabrication?

Will this be carbureted or EFI?

After this we can go through the math on an actual blower setup for the 350.

I prefer Turbos to blowers, but each to their own... You can buy a twin turbo kit for your 350.

I suggest a centrifugal blower vs a roots style blower. Here is a Buick 350 with a Procharger centrifugal blower. As of now there is no kit for a blower on a 350 but there may be one in the future:

I would recommend turbocharging as well, less HP lost to run. If you need a little help I am making my manifold and have a lot of the tooling still setup for the fab work, also have a turbo kit I will be parting with as I am making a different one. Let me know if your in need!

I can fabricate when I need to I have an oxy torch and a stick and mig welder. As well as a mill drill for light milling work. My 200-4r is rated at 550 hp I would like to be safe and keep the engine below 500hp. I also have a ta212 cam. Note that this engine is not done yet the heads have been rebuilt with ta springs and a 3 angle valve job. But the short block is untouched for now. I planned to use a roots type blower for the shock effect of seeing it threw the hood of the car and because from what I've read it's best for low boost situations. Also note that arp main studs, head studs and rod bolts are going to be used weather or not the engine get supercharged.

The roots blower will have a BIG visual affect! The do take some serious HP to run, you will need to make your own manifold for it or have one made$
What is the purpose for the car?
Race? A fun car to drive around?

There are 2 types of positive displacement superchargers. One is the roots type and the other is the twin screw.
There is also a design which is a cross between the two used by Eaton/Magnuson.

The roots supercharger is not an air compressor and produces manifold pressure simply by blowing more air into the engine than the engine can pump. Hence the word "Blower" used for description. The air is pushed around the outside of the rotors in the case from the inlet to the outlet side and most of it is prevented from returning where the rotors mesh. As the air pressure is increased on the outlet side so is the air temperature. Because there is clearance between the rotors some of the heated air gets returned to the inlet side where the rotors mesh giving the roots blower poor thermal efficiency.

The twin screw supercharger is a true air compressor. The screw and auger configuration compresses the air down the length of the case until it is discharged out the bottom. Since the air is always moving away from the inlet, heated outlet air cannot return to the inlet giving the twin screw design a high thermal efficiency. http://www.lysholm.us/showroom.php

The Eaton supercharger has roots style rotors. The rotors are twisted so the air is moved down the length of the case like the twin screw giving it many of the advantages of the twin screw.

There are 3 main suppliers for twin screw street superchargers.
    http://www.lysholm.us/
    http://www.kennebell.net/KBWebsite/Home_pg/layouts/Homepage.htm
    http://www.whipplesuperchargers.com/

    And the Eaton supercharger

    http://www.magnusonproducts.com/
    http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/ProductsServices/PerformanceProducts/Products/Superchargers/

All of the above companies supply their superchargers with a bypass valve.
When boost is not needed the valve is open and the supercharger is bypassed. When you are just cruising it takes less than 1 hp to drive the supercharger.
Step on the gas pedal, the valve closes and instant boost.

The Axial models are for EFI and the Radial models are for carburetors.

You are correct about the low end torque advantage of a positive displacement supercharger. You get to run a very tight low rpm stall converter and will have plenty of torque for cruising while in overdrive with the converter locked up.

Will continue this discussion next post. If you haven't done so already, take the time to look over the above web sites. There is some very good technical information. As always some is biased as each company explains why their product is better.

Wow that's a lot of info (munch munch munch) keep it coming lol. This car is just for cursing and the ocational unsanctioned race lol. Mostly to keep the ricers at bay. There every where! So much so that I wonder where they get the money for those cars when those kids are still in highschool. Anyway I really want to keep it carburated but as I was a day dreaming a thought crossed my mind. How water/rain friendly is this blower sticking out the hood going to be?

Oh and what's up with those B&M superchargers? Do they still make them? They seem fairly priced on eBay.

  18. pmuller9

    pmuller9 Well-Known Member

B&M was the first to make a low profile setup. As far as I know they are no longer made. They are the old style roots type.
The main reason for using the old style blower on the street is for the "old school look" and is generally used at low boost levels.
I saw a car show up at an outdoor hotrod meet with two 4 barrel carbs sitting on top of an empty 871 blower case. He wanted the look without the boost.
The next engine we build will be a 671 blown alcohol injected 427 BBC because we are duplicating an engine that was used in the 1960s in a hydroplane.
The goal is to get it looking as close as possible to the original engine.

I prefer not to use the old roots style for street performance applications. They are the least efficient supercharger.
Because of the poor overall efficiency at higher boost levels, the boosted air temperature is high so the engine compression needs to be lower in order to tolerate pump gas.
Wasted energy also means it take more hp to drive the blower for a given boost.
As a result of both lower compression and increased drive power, rear wheel horsepower suffers.
They also don't have features like bypass valves for when you are just cruising which is most of the time.

Water injection by sucking in large amounts of rain water doesn't work too well. LOL

    Those whipple supercharger looks good.

Yep; Whipple used to make the HUGE 9.8 liter superchargers for the Top Alcohol racing classes. PSI has taken over that area.

This thread is titled "Math Time!" so here it is.

You would use the W140R with a carburetor for a 350 cu in engine.
It takes 1 lb of air per minute to make 10 HP. So 500 hp requires 50 lbs/min or (Divide by .069) 725 cfm.
W140 pumps 140 cu in per rev or (Divide by 1728) .081 cu feet per rev. The supercharger would pump 725 cfm at around 9000 rpm.
If you want 500 hp at 6000 engine rpm, then the W140 would need a 1.5 overdrive pulley setup.

These superchargers hit an 80% Volumetric Efficiency by 4000 rpm so with a 1.5 overdrive, 80% of full boost would be in by 2600 engine rpm.
If you want boost in sooner you use a smaller supercharger and turn it faster. The only problem here is the smaller chargers are not setup for a carburetor.

Also note that the peak Volumetric Efficiency for the carb versions are around 95% where the peak VE for the Axial chargers are 99%.
The reason is the opening in the top of the case for the carb decreases the compression distance of the case and the rotors do not seal
as well as they try to pump the air down the length of the case.

A 350 cu in engine pumps 175 cu in per rev at 100% VE. A stock unported head with some cam will give an 85% engine VE at best. 85% of 175 is about 150 cu in per rev.
The supercharger at 1.5 overdrive pumps 140 X 1.5 or 210 cu in per rev. The compression ratio = charger flow/engine flow or 210/150 = 1.4.
    Atmospheric pressure at sea level = 14.7 psi. 14.7 X 1.4 = 20.58 psi absolute or 5.88 psi above 1 atmosphere.
So boost will be about 6 psi without considering added pressure due to the increase in air temperature during compression.
This would be true if an intercooler was being used to bring the boosted air temp back to initial air temp.

The actual pressure is the atmospheric pressure multiplied by the compression ratio raised to the power of (the specific heat ratio for air) or 1.4
    14.7 X (1.4^1.4) = 23.5
    23.5-14.7 = 8.8 lbs of boost.

If the cylinder head was ported with a cam that would give 100% VE at peak torque then the compression ratio would be 1.2 for boost pressure of 4.4
You can see how much head flow plays especially when you are not using an intercooler.
A 4.4 psi difference in manifold pressure means a much cooler intake charge decreasing detonation and less power needed to drive the supercharger for more rear wheel HP.
