    Hi folks,

Well, I have a practically new model 7564401C Mallory HEI distributor. It was mounted on my new engine for dyno break-in and died in the process --- I haven't done any troubleshooting yet. I am guessing it is the module.

I am concerned about continued availability of replacement parts in the (near) future. Summit is the only place that I can find a replacement Hyfire module which is what it needs.

Would you just say good night to Mallory and move on to MSD or something else? It seems like a waste, but I am wondering if I can count on this Mallory unit for the long term.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Edit: Do I have to use that Mallory 699 hyfire module,

or will others work? MSD has one that looks similar.

    Nearly new and it died?
    I'd troubleshoot and repair.

IF (big IF) the module is faulty, I'd be unlikely to buy another Mallory module.

"I" would go to any automotive parts store in America, and buy a quality HEI module such as a Delco D1906, or an equivalent reputable competitor. This would sacrifice the rev-limiter, but will likely be a much more-reliable item.

'Course, you're not in America. You're in New Zealand, right? Even so, I bet you can get an HEI module locally.

Thanks for your input Shurkey. I don't mind sacrificing the rev limiter from the module because I plan to run an ignition box with one. Your advice is exactly what I was looking for.....
I have previously come across your article that you link to above. Very well written and informative. I will use it in my troubleshooting. Awesome!

One more question please. If I use a module bypass cable and a 6 series MSD ignition box, do I even need a module inside the distributor?

No you do not. The magnetic pick up of the HEI triggers the box directly. There is no bypass module. I would check the pick up first, could be why you have no spark. HEI GM distributors can have intermittently faulty pick ups. Try moving the pick up wires around and see if the engine fires.
