I have a 1971 GS 455 with a 68 vintage M 20 in it. Motor is pretty much stock and the car is a daily driver with 3:42 gears. The current clutch set up has a shutter as 1st gear is let out otherwise it all works fine. It supposedly has a aluminum flywheel but other than that I do not know anything about it. I want to run a stock type, or slightly above stock clutch as I don't want a heavy pedal. What would you guy's recommend as a replacement?? Cost effective is alway's. Nice!!!
    thanks!!!!

I'd go to Autozone and pick up an OE replacement and call it good. I ran one in my Skylark for years and 60,000 miles and was quite happy with it. Unless you are going to be on the track with slicks, it's going to be plenty of clutch and not have a heavy pedal.

IMO, a dealership replacement clutch won't be any different than a parts store one. There hasn't been an OEM ten spline transmission made by GM (or associated clutch set by AC Delco) in almost three decades, let alone an 11" ten spline clutch.

Centerforce dual friction for a light pedal.

I can't comment on pedal feel as my car isn't back together yet, but after researching quite a bit I went with a center force for my slightly built BB. Again, im afraid I can't report on useage, but just what I read (and read and read) led me to make that choice.

I have the autozone replacement kit in mine, M20 too.
Its the first 4 speed car Ive owned so I thought the pedal was heavy, but all the Buick guys who tried it at a recent show said it was perfectly normal.
Dont get me wrong its not that heavy, I just had no idea what to expect. I never get tired of shifting, I love it.

When I bought my Autozone one, it was a Centerforce.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

I would buy a name brand unit like Centerforce, Hayes. For you application, I would stick with an HD street (some call them street/strip) diaphram style. A Borg&Beck (3 finger) would be overkill. I would go to a steel flywheel.

    Guys

I installed a ACDelco Clutch, fine spline, that was listed for a corvette for my BBB.

No problem so far pedal feels like stock.

I just sent my clutch and pressure plate to Ft. Wayne Clutch and Driveline in Ft. Wayne, Indiana for rebuild. For less than $200.00 they completely redid both, including shipping back to me in S. Florida. It was an original diaphragm style Borg&Beck out of a 65 Gran Sport. Ask for Scott and check out their website.

I may be wrong here, but aren't aluminum flywheels known for causing a bit of a "shutter"?? Mine is steel, I don't have experience with an aluminum one, I just thought I recall reading that somewhere (probably here)

Keep in mind, this clutch selection was fine spline, not 10 spline.
