Lunati Cams, any good?

It will be nearly a month before summit could get a Crower lvl 3 in, and one of the few similar cams they have in stock is this Lunati.

    .492/.523 lift

    275/285 (225/235 @ .050)

    110LSA

This engine is gonna be ~10:1 (3.0 v6 pistons) and have headers, 800cfm qjet, TA dual plane, stock heads with a valve job and comp 980-16 springs, standard stuff.
Would this be a good streetable cam? It's a bit "wilder" than the crower I like, but not by much.
Any input as always is appreciated.

It's a tie between that or a Comp 268. Comp is .469/.469, 286/268 (218/218) which is basically the inbetween cam compared to the crower and the Lunati.

When my son's Comp 268 in his '79 Regal flattened a few lobes a couple of months ago I initially ordered a T/A Cam to replace it but UPS decided to lose it for a month and then when I finally got it, it was broken in half. While all of that was going on I ordered a cam from Lunauti because this is his daily driver and we needed it back on the road. Lunauti had the cam here in just a few days and pulls great from idle to 5500rpm, mild idle. Felt a lot stronger then the Comp Cam. It's part number 10920701. Specs from their website, Hydraulic Flat Tappet. Best choice for 350 c.i. daily driven street performance vehicle. Good torque and HP production with heavier emphasis on the low to mid range. Will work with A/C, power brakes and stock converter. Fair idle.; Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 256/262; Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 213/219; Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .470/.484; LSA/ICL: 112/108; Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd; RPM Range: 1300-5500. His 350 is a basic rebuild with stock '68 pistons, headers, HEI and stock intake with Sniper Fuel Injection. Rebuilt TH350 with 2000 stall Jegs converter and a 3.42 posi rear. With the comp cam it ran a best of 14.5 at 93mph but the cam was already failing. This one pulls a lot harder and we were hoping for low 14's but just over a week ago he hit some black ice and totaled the car on a tree. Thankfully he was unhurt. The drivetrain survived and we just picked up an '85 Regal to replace it with.

Sorry to hear about the car, glad your son is ok. I had a '70 SP in my 85 Regal that threw a rod out the side of the block and punched the starter off. Mine has a 2500 stall th350 with a transgo shift kit, and a 3.42 GN rear end. Curious to see how your car turns out. That cam sounds like more what I'll need for my application. It still wouldn't ship until 2/4 along with damn near every other camshaft summit sells, but it sounds like a solid choice.

Nothing wrong with Lunati cams. IIRC they made some of the cams for Poston.

Order direct from Crower. You may pay a little more than Summit but you will get the cam you want.
I've seen the comp cam hammer valve seats out. I would never use it.

That Lunati is big for a 350. It wants to turn RPM that your pistons are not made for. Idle quality will suffer and power brakes will be marginal. Single plane intake and Holley carb would work best with it. Headers mandatory.

    Hi,

I have never used Lunati, but having a Oldsmobile motor done and the builder prefers them for their cam lobe design options. Ended up with a Howard's due to a blank shortage.

Think you can have anyone make a cam to the spec's you desire, just look at material and how it works with your cam gear material.

Also degree it when installing as I've seen a few post of cams being off and how that can hurt performance.

    Regards,

Before I started running custom cams in everything, Lunati was my go to. Still use their VooDoo lobes with different LC and LSA if we're going to be doing a hydraulic custom.

Agreed, we ran a lot of their older stuff. Once we start getting to .600 lift and 250ish degrees of duration at .050 in our bigger CID (514/552/572) 385 series engines, the slow closing ramp is a real big help on a street engine, plus the older lobes don't have the lift we're after (their "310 duration" lobe only has .540 lift). So VooDoos it is for that application.

I bought the cam directly from Lunauti. They had it in stock and it was here in a few days. I think it was right around $175 plus shipping.

If you are referring to the Lunati cam I listed above it idles smoothly and had plenty of vacuum for power brakes. We did have headers on it but had no issues at all with stock intake.

Ken, glad to hear. From the specs it really shouldn't. While it will run acceptably with stock intake it would make more power with the single plane. That's all I meant.

That cam quickstage1 mentioned sounds enticing. Sounds like a better fit than the one i mentioned, considering my heads are stock I wouldn't be able to to take full advantage of the larger lunati.

Lunati is reputable, the GSCA uses/used them.

I agree Lunati makes a great product. Many fellow Buick guys I know over the years including myself have had great luck with them, have had several grinds for various builds never an issue. My current 350 car has TA’s 510H cam, been in the 70 block with 10:1 for almost 7 years, in an 81 Century wagon with a 200r 2400 stall and 3.73’s has been 14.50’s many times even with the little 670 Holley street avenger carb and a stock mechanical fuel pump. Has a 13 in it with some changes but it was my daily for 3 years and it was such a great build for drive ability I never changed it. Great cam and awesome idle - had 2 1/2 exhaust through Magnaflows until the driveshaft let loose in the middle at WOT on the interstate at which point it ate most of that exhaust and made some impressions to the floor...yeah that day ugh.

It worked great for us. I'll ask my son tonight if he has any video's of it running and I'll try to post them if he does.

I asked, he said he doesn't have any video's with it idling and right now the engine and trans are sitting on my garage floor since we stripped out the wrecked car.

I know it's late to chime in, I have the 275/285 cam in my 350, it is very streetable, I have a/c, power brakes without issues, but I can say, I feel like the car should have more on low end. After 3000 the car pulls, but with 3:42,posi, and 275 tires the car chirps the tires on take off. But the power ranger for the cam is 2500-5500. In future I will look for a lower rpm power ranger cam. But thats another thread to be continued. Josh
