I'm thinking about "going in" on an engine/tranny with another guy -- one of us wants the engine, the other wants the tranny. Here are the details: 401 Nailhead and switch-pitch TH400 taken from a 1965 LeSabre. Assuming that both are in the same relative condition, the question is this: "What percentage of the final cost should be attributed to the engine (including all associated parts) and what percentage to the tranny (including all associated parts). In other words, if we bought this assembly for (just for the sake of argument) $1000, how much should we each pay? Kind of an odd question, but there you are . . . All opinions would be appreciated.
I will give you some feedback for what it is worth. ZERO I presume these are just cores unless you know differntly. If they have been stting that is how I would treat them for purpose of evaluation. I could get a core junkyard for TH 400 for about $ 50-75 and a core 455 for about $200-250. I could buy a core switch pitch for about the same or perhaps a little more as a TH400. (Most yards have no idea whath they are) I could get a core 401 cid for $100-150. Now if you were dealing with known good engines and known good trans the ratio would change with the engine being weighted more.
Keep in mind that the ST-400 attached to a nailhead has a unique bolt pattern that will not fit the 455(BOP Pattern), if that is what you have in mind.
Switch pitches are hard to find when you NEED one. I wouldn't say the trans is worth more than $300, nor would I say the engine was worth more than $500 tops.
