Anybody know how to get in touch with Hector, Carhex, I've tried PM's, but don't Know if I did it correctly. Looking at a new steering box if the front end alignment doesn't cure the wander and loosey-goosey feeling. Thanks
Gary --get under the car with a light. Turn the steering column slowly by hand above the box. Watch the reaction, or lack thereof, in the drag link etc., before the wheels begin to move. By doing this you will be able to see where the issue is located. I would not assume it is the box, although it could be.
Just to let you know, everything, I mean everything, is new Moog parts. Installed within the last 14 months! If any of that is the fault I'm going to give Moog a serious case of the red ass! Converted to front discs off a 72 Skylark. New wheel bearings, new inner/outer tie rods, new drag link, new shocks, new ball joints, new arm bushings and shaft bushings. I spent a lot on this, but the gear box is the last remaining original piece under the front end of this car. So, I think if the front end alignment doesn't cure it, then Hector may be getting a call.
Gary I have him on FB messanger. We've discussed replacing the Sun Coupe box. But also I have the box on the parts car if you want to try that.
Well, now that the car is running great and has all new front end parts, I thought I would move up to a faster gear box before getting a front end alignment. I have found a Cardone gear box that is recommended by users of the SS396 forum and may go that way. I know it's Cardone and rebuilt, but no body seems to be bitching about it. I'd like to hear from Hector to get a handle on price and delivery because we all know his stuff is good. I haven't started the rag joint search yet, next on the list.
That is a GREAT improvement! Really transforms how the car drives. Depending on which box you get, you'll likely need a different rag joint since diameter and spline count on the box changed thru the years. Even the 66 had 2 sizes.... one for manual, one for power.
You did not mention new tires. Old worn tires will definitely wander. And before you condemn the steering box, there is a steering box lash adjustment that can be made to minimize play. It is relatively easy to do.
Sorry Brother I was on an 11 day hunting trip right at the end of Air conditioning season working daily 10 to 14 hours. I quit my job at the end of the season so I can do more car stuff. I'm happier doing car stuff and providing parts and service to fellow car guys. my gear boxes run 120 shipped plus a 120 core charge. I can have one out to you tomorrow just call or text me 626 488 5472 thanks Hector
