Looks like a 455 to me. No air cleaner support bracket so it is big car and you don't see the water valve for a/c, but like you said it's a very early book so who knows

In AC cars that hose to the heater valve was only 5.5 inches long and it looks longer than that. If it’s a big car it is a pretty rare one with no AC. Test mule is still my guess.?

The 70 ST1 4-speed for sale in the other thread has a tower clamp in the same location.

    I saw that.

It also has what appears to be the correct, ribbed heater hose and that clamp definitely looks like it's been there a while.

Some insight on what's what would be cool...

Almost too coincidental with the early engine picture to be added later, it would have been a hardware store worm clamp otherwise. I could not read the build date on the cowl tag of that brown stage 1 it was on.

The clamp at the other end is a tower as well.

And I think that code reads 07B?

Not a 7, there is a line at the bottom. Possibly a 1. Look at the other numbers on the plate.

    True.

Well, this could have been avoided if this auction wasn't so ambiguous.

I still say someone swapped those towers in. There is plenty of documentation showing wire clamps belong there. Try passing concourse with the towers on a Flint built non AC car.

Original towers have date codes on them. To add to the confusion year one offered date coded towers for a while. I know of a November and December built cars that both had wire clamps. I doubt January was different. I even got a short 70 style heater hose bracket off the January junkyard Skylark for $5. It went with my GSX.

At least in '68 the tower clamp was an option

That is proof that is a very early picture. I am guessing Buick was screwing around with 455’s in 68. If they only knew the stress this would cause us 50 years later after many are dead.

BDCEA00F-350A-44CC-A433-DE7B9AB4CB28.jpeg This is from an old Steve Dove book. He took all these measurements off an original car. A good painter like I worked with was able to work with these. Mine would not use the stencils. You can’t do better than this. Also every car was a bit different depending on how the factory guy put the stencils on.
