That’s why I like to have assembly manual in hand. Show the judge the California option page and let them explain that. And yes they are replacement fenders. I wish I knew difference at time. There are always a few things that get overlooked in a restoration. I omitted the hook paint bare spot on fender too. Didn’t want the negative comments on sloppy work.

Those three finger pinch clamps are correct. Like Brett said. The size available when I did car was only available in green so that’s what I used. They are now available in black. Funny thing is I ran into a slew of Buick’s back in the 90’s in a U pull it yard near Reading PA. I visited the yard several times and Buick’s kept showing up. We are talking Skylarks and big cars. Most of those cars still had those clamps on them. All were oversprayed with red engine paint along with part of the hose so it was tough to tell what color the clamp was. I know a local guy that is original owner of a 70 GS 455 and he still had those painted red pinch clamps on his car. He replaced the hose he told me but made sure he put clamps back on. I am pretty sure I hit mine with some red paint after that picture was taken.

    Yeah Dave,
On the original cars I have seen both the clips and by-pass hose were painted red. For 1970 the distributors were also installed as was the fuel pump and water pump. They all got painted, with a paint shield cup stuck over the front flange of the water pump, and one on the fuel pump bowl and on top of the dist.

Most of us do the engine assembly just like you did it. It would be hard to explain to some judge that is not a "Buick knowledgeable" person just how they were actually painted, plus it makes it look like you didn't do it right if you do it just like the factory.

I have had points taken off at an aaca show for over spray on the engine. I had to laugh.

Makes sense why spare distributors I have had did have red on them. Some of the caps in that yard even had some red on them. Amazing a cap would last that long,

Here is a good shot of an original 70 fender. You an see where the hook held it for painting. Check out the skinny yellow stripe on the washer hose that was typical on 70 not like the fat yellow stripe used in 71-72. DJ's Camera 086.JPG

Early built cars in 70 had heater wire clip drilled into box instead of on heater box stud. This is often forgotten when discussing early vs late. DJ's Camera 055.JPG

Check out power steering hose marks. Hose was made well before car which is 11/69 build. DJ's Camera 063.JPG

    Dave,
The bottom of the vacuum tank on the dist was definitely painted. I have a dist somewhere where you can plainly see that the "paint mule" put on the dist bottomed out on the vacuum line that sticks out of the vacuum tank. The entire bottom of the tank and dist from there to the motor was painted red.

    That is cool.
Duane , this makes absolute sense then. I have this original in my stash. I am amazed I put my hands on it so easily.

Actually Duane it keeps the brains of old guys like us working. It reminds us of things so we can remember it next time.
