This coming season Im going to be taking the 68 to the strip a few times. New posi and gears going in as well. I had absolutely zero traction last year with my street tires so im going to grab a pair or rims and drag radials i can slap on and drive to the track as needed. I dont want anything fancy or expensive, just looking for something that will do. Any suggestions? I have a 68 and was thinking 15x8 with a 5" BS. To help with the lip clearance

Since you're going to buy some get lightweight ones like Weld Wheels or something.

Yea some used welds are easy to find, or even some centerline auto drags, both are light and strong enough to drive on, as far as tires go how much HP you making? I would go with a DR no matter what , the pro bracket MT's are awesome, but I wouldn't drive on them , the MT Street DR's are good if you are under 500hp and wanna drive on them they will certainly work with more HP but need a good track

I have the aftermarket 15x8 rally wheels with Hoosier 26x9 slicks--I put them in the back seat, a cheap floor jack in the trunk, and swap at the track. Not sure my backspace but they fit nice and hook well.

Patrick, could I see a pic of how they look/fit? Im not familiar with what that size would be.

Not sure the HP, its not much over stock. running high 14s trying to feather the throttle with lots of wheel spin all the way out. And 2.56 open rear. 68 350 with crower3 cam, big valves, trishield 9.5 converter. Having 3.42 posi installed soon and need traction so I can let it rip. Want to see what she will do.

Here's the photo Lance M took at the 'Nats a few years ago; I'm in the far (right) lane. The second pic is another option; they're a similar if not same size treaded race tire.

The Posi will cure most of your issue. A 350 won't need much tire, ID do some 255/60's or 275/50's would be nice if they will fit . what's your best mph so far?

255/60 will fit. I heard if I go 275/60 i need to go 5" backspace.
My best mph was 93mph. Heres one of my slips.. Left lane. Horrible R/T I know. Im still new this was my first time at the track last year. [IMG]

I'd do the 255's , don't worry about the light. Just work on launch rpm, be it leaving from idle or getting up on the brakes find out what works best then if you want worry about the light, you can sit on the green bulb for almost 30sec b4 most tree guys will back you back out

Without adding more power 14.50's is about all you gonna see

Thanks for the tips/advice. I'll practice that!
A 255 would be nice, then I can run a 15x7 standard wheel. Im super excited about getting the posi and gears in

    With a 1.87 60ft on a 14.99 run, I don't think you're spinning as much as you thought.

Agree the mph and ET aren't to far from coinciding with each other IMO as well

Yes you're right on that slip. That was after a few passes getting the feel for it and realizing i had to take off easily and keep feathering the throttle to prevent spin. If I just smash it and go... I dont go. lol just spin. Remember this is a one tire fire. Not too hard to lose traction. Im sure it will be much better when the posi is in.

255/60/R15 MT DR's on 7" Buick rims is what I'm running at the track with no issues.
someday I would like to cut the lip back or order another set of custom BS rims in something besides my 18's for a wider contact patch at the strip. Problably not necessary for my power level in the 1/4, but I like wider rear tires.

Unless you have a shortened rear or a modified wheelhouse, an 8" rim w / 4" BS on 68-69 cars requires more BS.
something like 5-5.125 BS centers it pretty good depending on how centered the body is.
every car's different so you should measure both sides of your car before ordering custom rims. (If you were considering)
