Lookin' at rearends

    Ok, I am going to be transplanting my 455 Stage 1 into my '82 Sport Coupe (Turbo car, but no motor) using a TH400 behind it. My question is, what is the width of a stock 7.5 rear?

    I have a couple 9" Ford's in the shop, but will need to know the correct width inorder to get a strong rearend under the car. I see that Speedway Motors has the bracket kit to set-up the LCA's and add disc's if I want.

    In the mean time I'll be running the 7.5 (2.92 gears) until I can set up the stronger rear.

    In this case money is an object. I'm kinda broke :Do No: so this has to be done as inexpensively as possible.

    Here are the car spec's:

    1982 Turbo Sport Coupe body (Black)
    Brand new Med Blue interior (everything)
    KYB shocks
    Complete rebuild on the front end
    Corvette Radiator (new in box)
    Dual Electric fan
    Heater delete (it's all gone & looks factory)
    15" Centerline's & new sticky tires (hey, they hook well enough to break Muncie's)

    Engine:
    1971 Stage 1 - all stock with around 15,000 miles since STD bore rebuild
    Dual Exaust from T/A

    Trans:

    1973 TH400 - all stock

    Right now the rear will be the weak link. It did hold up to the BBC/TH400 combo on the street. But I didn't beat it too hard. That combo is now in the '64 Nova 400 that is also going together.

    believe it or not i still have a 7.5 posi out of an 82 4dr cutlass and all i ended up doing is puting in the richmond 3.73 gears and i havnt managed to break it yet. key word being yet.i do run drag radials on it and not slicks though because i know that would junk it for sure. i know that the only stock 9" rear that fits in a gbody width wise is the one out of the lincoln version of the granada and usually had disk brakes. im pretty sure the rest of them are too wide. i will measure mine for you if i can make time to get over to where its stored.

    The Ford 9-inch rear end made its debut in Ford half-ton pickups and in Ford/Lincoln/Mercury passenger cars in 1957. These rear ends were produced over a span of 28 years, with production ending in the Ford passenger cars at the end of 1980 and in the Ford trucks by the close of the 1985 model production run.
