I just installed a new turn signal switch on my 1972 Skylark. The only problem is that I ordered the wrong part and now need to go back in and put in a different switch. The lock plate retaining ring was a bit stretched but serviceable the last time, but I'm concerned that removing it again will further compromise its function. However, I haven't been able to find a replacement under the original part GM number: 580074. Not have I been able to find a reliable cross reference.

I would appreciate any help in finding a new replacement. Thanks in advance.

There's one on ebay for $20.00 which seems like a crazy price to me. I've seen them repro, I think, but can't remember where. Honestly, I've used the same ring for 5-6 removals on the same column. If it broke it would only make noise. The way it sits in the groove, it can't really be compromised. I say inspect it, tweak it into a round shape, even if it sits like a lock washer unloaded it should be ok. Just make sure when it's installed it's in the groove all around.

Just about any 1969 through 1985 should use that same ring. ws

After you install the ring, use a small screwdriver and tap the ring into the lock plate. It's captive in the plate, it can't come out without depressing the plate.
