Does anyone make lightweight bumper brackets for 68-69 A bodies? Thinking about putting the old girl on a diet this winter!

I've seen some shop made ones over with the Olds crowd. Brad Wise maybe?

Yeah Jim, I was thinking this was the way I'd probably have to go but just thought I'd check first. Thanks for the replies

We gave our factory steel ones to a fabricator and he made up some light weight brackets. Turned out really nice.

pretty easy to do out of sheet aluminum but I think the weight savings on my 66 wouldn't have been more than a pound or two.

We made mine out of sheet aluminum. It was quite easy but we did have access to a break. The brackets saved about 8 lbs. Along with the glass bumper it was almost 24 lbs.

what was the sheet aluminum thickness you used for the brackets?

I believe it is 1/8 in. Maybe 3/16. But it is only holding up a glass bumper that weighs almost nothing. We also put a strap on each end to replace the factory rods that support the corners. If I get over to the shop today I'll snap some pics. Nothing elaborate just functional and light.

Here's a pic of our fronts. Rears are designed about the same. Saved a lot of weight. I weighed everything before and after but it's been a while and I don't remember the exact numbers. [IMG]

Do the rules state you can't make it out of balsa wood? Or card board? It's not like it really has to serve a purpose besides just being there?

I no that just sounds really intellectual , ..... I' mean ridiculous

My uncle and I made these. Brackets saved 16lbs total weight front and back. Going to fit the fiberglass bumpers tomorrow and then spray them on Sunday.

Nice work Mark. Will they support a steel bumper?
