Hey all I'm still piecing together stuff for my build and was wondering what lifters everyone is running? The engine will be a .030 over 455 zero deck 10:1 compression 290-94H cam street/strip combo in the 450-550 (hopefully)HP range basically your common street build. I was looking at the comp cams pro magnum hydraulic lifters 865-16.

I like those lifters. Got em in my Stage 2. Been in there since 2003...still revs to 6500.....with the same set of valve springs.

First let me say I 100% believe you that you like your 17 year old lifters... Fast forward to today I doubt they are the same lifters....

Lifer world has gone stupid lately...... Just for giggles try to a set of l6 stock lifters for a vortec chevy motor...You CANT get a decent set. all MIC

1969rivi. if TA perf has a set of made in USA Delphi lifters that would be your best bet..

I swapped my roller lifters from Morel to Johnson. They are incredibly quiet. Maybe the Johnson flat tappet lifters are good as well. I'd ask Jim Weise what he uses.

I’m running the same cam on a similar build and use TA’s lifters. Also a 30 over 455.

I understand, I just thought if Johnson can make a great hydraulic roller lifter, MAYBE they make a great hydraulic flat tappet lifter.

Dang the price went up ,,, Oh-Well thats life.. TA 1405 lifters are Delphi flat tappet lifters with the harden face.. A Very big plus... You can tell by the ring cut in body.... catalog has a GREAT pic

the 1405J does NOT have the hardened seat.. no ring.

I've read on here also that some guys like the comp cam pro lifters and that they're pretty quiet. I'll look into the TA 1405 lifters and see what they're about.

Are the lifters quiet? Side question, how do you like the cam, does it perform well with the rest of the combo? I've been struggling with cam choice cause I want optimal power/HP but I love a gnarly lumpy cam sound also! I bought this cam in hopes to get the best of both worlds.

Yes the lifters are definitely quiet. As far as the cam goes I really like it. It pulls well on the street and sounds great. I’ve only ran it up to close to 5k or so though as the motor only has about 400 miles on it. It was built for a street car so I doubt I’ll even take it any further than 5k anyway. It has small valve 70 heads with a valve job, eddy intake, full length headers and a 3 inch exhaust with turbo mufflers with the factory M21 and 3.42 Posi rear. It’s an absolute blast to drive and definitely sounds gnarly! I’ve gotten tons of compliments on the sound already. Granted this is my first and only BBB so I have little to compare it to though lol.

Your build and mine are pretty much alike. At first I'll be running 68 430 heads, gasket matched a bit of port/polish work and 3 angle valve job then get a set of TA SE aluminum heads when funds permit. Do you got a sound clip of your car/engine?

I had the same thought with the heads. One day I’d like to add some TA heads too. I’ll probably do an M22W or M22Z first though. My old Muncie is a little tired and I’m trying not to destroy it since it’s the matching numbers trans.

I do have a sound clip. It may be too large of a file to put on here though.

Yeh my th400 was tired, I rebuilt it with beefed up parts and a JW 9.5 converter best thing I ever did. Now it's the engines turn lol. You'll probably have to post the video to YouTube first then share the link on here inorder to view it.

So I checked out the TA 1405 lifters and they sound good. Only issue is they're $179 USD plus the shipping and duty fees. I can get the comp cams pro lifters here for $206 CDN (equivalent to $150 USD) no shipping and no duty fees.

Problem with the comp cam lifters is they are made in china.... They are soft faced... odds are they won't survive break-in... Now what call chomp and complain.. they won't do anything for you... So now you'll be buying a new cam. gasket set.. new timing chain plus the Delphi lifters.. tearing the motor down to do a total cleaning.... What ever the total cost difference is it's cheap insurance.... Its you money ....
Comp does NOT make their Lifters...

If I couldn't have got the harden faced Delphi lifters (1405). not the soft faced 1405j there would be some Johnston roller lifters motor...

review from summit... Do your research.......
Dont look at old reviews. they were more than likely great 17 years ago.

    Garbage product made for Comp

Who ever makes these lifters for Comp Cams is doing a terrible job. 3 lifters plungers of the first batch were as if there was a super hard spring beer them only being able to depress them approx .030 of an inch and two would not compress at all. I thought they were solid lifters at first. 1 lifter arrived completely disassembled with parts rolling around in the box. The second batch of lifters had 7 lifters of what I would call an absolute failure. 3 plungers stuck as if they were like a solid lifter and the others would just rattle like a babies toy. Plungers not coming up to there limit. Utterly ridiculous, I am completely Godsmacked!

I'm definitely hearing you, I'm not doing this engine twice! The difference of $29 doesn't bother me, the part that sucks the most is the shipping and duty charges. I have a US drop box in Niagara Falls NY but I can't cross the border to get anything cause of this dam covid19 virus:mad:.

Thank you. I appreciate your honesty and that's exactly why I ask for feed back from the board, I want to make sure I build this engine right because I don't want to throw money away and do it twice. Besides you guys have done this enough times to know what's good and what's crap!

TAP does sell the Johnson 1405j for 80$ they are a soft face.. I think they are US made. Im not recommending them for you to buy but the are good price to look into. Maybe start a new post 1405 VS 1405J. Call Johnson ask how they compare to the Delphi on the face temper...
