Since the weather here got into the 60's cabin fever got the best of me. I decided to go out in Sat. night and do a little "cruising" in my Stage1 powered Nova(Apollo).
After a bit I met a few friends at a local parts store whose parking lot is available after hours. We BS'd for about 20 minutes when a local guy in a CLEAN '69 Roadrunner went by and rev'd us. I know this car well, although I don't know the owner(I've seen it around alot). An engine builder I know did the motor. 481 inches of aluminum headed Mopar. 630 hp is the rumor. Runs 10.90's is another number floating around. The car is well restified. It's mildly minitubbed and has a ladder bar rear suspension and widedened Mopar Magnum 500 wheels. Nicely executed.
Well, he went by again and rev'd at us again. Man, thats all the call out any self respecting Buick driver needs...Right? To me it is, so off I went to chase him down and see if he's got an itch I need to scratch. Caught up to him at a light on the edge of town. How fortuitous, no cops and a clear road to the country in front of us. Light turns green and I roll out at half throttle to keep from blowing away the ET streets on the cold winter pavement. he matches me and I wait a split second since I'm not 100% sure we're in a full on race. His front end jumped up as he matted the pedal about halfway across the intersection. Yep it's on. I pin the throttle to the floor and hold my finger just above the little red button in my steering wheel spoke that adds another 150hp on demand. I watch the tach and bang second early at 5200 to avoid spinning hard on the 1-2 upshift. Right after the shift I check the mirror and notice I'm pulling on him without my little blue bottle's assistance. About halfway through second he lifted. I let out and stop at the last light before a 5 mile stretch to our lake. He pulls up and tells me he's having carb problems. I'm dubious but I've heard he's a decent guy so I give him the benefit of the doubt and tell him we should do it again when his car is 100%. He gives me a thumbs up and rolls his window up. Hmmm, I'm wondering, so when the light goes green I repeat the same process over again. Same outcome. He nails it. I nail it. I pull through second and he lets out. Maybe he is having a problem. maybe he's saving face. I Dunno. All I know is.. for just shy of an 1/8 mile he was looking at taillights.
Either we'll do it again 'cause he had problems or we won't since he knows he got beat. I've got a lot more left in mine without the bottle too since it's got 6 total track passes and about 100 street miles. Me thinks he's in trouble.

Why is that a good kill, Ben ?

Read the story again: they agreed not to race because the Mopar was suffering from carb trouble..... :Smarty:

Its a good story But maybe the guy with the mopar was lying about his carb problems because he got beaten by a Buick. If my mopar ran in the high 10's and it lost to a stage1 on the street I would make an excuse also. Or maybe he did have problems, I say good kill because its a good story to read also glad the site is back up.

    Carb problems....HA!

My guess is he lied. Would you challenge anyone unless you were sure your "carb problems" were fixed?

I can't imagine anyone in a Road Runner is going to concede defeat to a Buick Apollo.

Aww, come on! He teased twice! If it was NASA rocket powered, you still don't act like that in a sick car. That Mopar just plain got left behind. Besides, if he comes back and really does have a "problem" repaired, this outcome is just the push of a button from being repeated anyway. Good story! And excellent detail, I was on the edge of my seat, I had to use the bathroom badly too, but I held it till I read it twice! Seriously, Great story! Tom

Just curious :Do No: :TU: :TU:
I mean if he really runs a 10.9, would you have covered him? :beer

Car ran 10.60@129 hitting the spray about halfway through 1st gear on it's 6 th pass. Ran 11.30@121 motor alone on it's first pass. Car was only "finished" enough to race 12 hours earlier. Since I was at an event I didn't want to take too many chances since I only had 3 qualifying passes to get it sorted out enough to win my race to get one for the team. Basic jetting and timing and that's it. Gotta get down the track to even have a shot.
Since then we've made some changes and removed some more weight. She's a solid 10's car on the ole pump gas motor alone. So, to answer your question; Anything can happen in a street race but if the performance of the Mopar is accurate to the rumors, I felt "perty" good I'd get him. :Brow:

Oh yeah!! I would keep my eyes peeled for the next time you see him and ask if he's running 100% yet?, [ this way theres no more excuses ].
Then, you can show him what Buick power is all about!! :Smarty: :TU: :TU:

Well if you're running 10.60's and the rumor is he's running 10.90's, I think that's his carb trouble right there.
