    Hello all!

Well, I finally talked a friend into coming down to help me put the new(er) motor and tranny into the GS. He's coming down over the weekend of the 11th.

    So, here's my problem:

We're eager, but we're both new at this.

I think I'll probably have all of the tools I need to do the job, and I logically understand the overall picture, but I have never swapped an engine before. He worked his way through high school and college as a boat and snowmobile mechanic, but he has never swapped an engine in a car either.

The engine/tranny is from a 74 LeSabre, and it's going into a 70 'Lark. I know that I will need to swap the accessory brackets from the 70 onto the 74 motor, and I know that I will need to put a different tail on the tranny to get it to fit. Aside from those two pearls of wisdom, I'm completely without specialized knowledge on the subject.

Anyone out there in TV land have some info I need to know before I start this swap? Anything I should do to the motor before I start to make this go more smoothly? Can I change the tail on the tranny myself, or do I need to take it someplace to have it done? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, if you live near Kansas City, know what the hell you are doing, and find this sort of work amusing, I'd love some knowledgeable help with this. Stop by for a spell and lend a wrench, and I'll pay all I can in food, beer, and gratitude.

    Thanks all for the advice.

PS- If anyone in the area has an engine hoist I could borrow/rent for the weekend, please let me know. I'll have to pay about $50 to rent one, and I'd just as soon pay someone I know if I have to pay. Thanks.

It would be easier to have you bring it all up here and swap it out to quote a old movie " I have an awesome set of tools""" I could supervise and have everytool at my disposal

Freed, I have to work a lot of weekends, so I may not be available personally, but your welcome to borrow my hoist if you decide to do it at home. Keep your money for Buick parts!!

    Just let me know.

    engine swap

hey freedster, I used to live in Independence,MO.I'm not sure what my schedule looks like for that weekend but I might be able to make it down there from Desmoines. I still have a lot of family in Independence so if I had to stay overnight I could.Where are you located?I would also take up Jeff on his offer for the hoist if you have a way to get it to you.I'm sure he's not too far from you.:TU:

    Sorry this is off topic.

Hey Jeff, sorry I missed you last week when I was up in your area, Bill had told me that you got sick from eating something bad
I hope everything is better. Take care

    Does this look familiar?

    Mike-

If you're offering use of your facilities, I thank you very much. I'll try to find a way to make that happen. Since I think you could probably do this blindfolded, I'd really appreciate your expertise, and I agree, you do have an awesome set of tools.

I'll line up a trailer, and give you a call. Thanks again!

PS- Anyone else interested in lending a hand, send me a PM.

    Jeff-

Thanks for the offer. Even if I do the work at Mike's, I'll probably still need a hoist to get the motor into the back of my pickup. I'll send you a note in a week or so.

    Thanks again!

    Re: engine swap

    Jeff-

Wow! Thanks for the offer. I'm in awe.

I marvel at your offering to drive a couple hundred miles each way to help some newbie you've never met swap an engine into a sick car that is just starting its restoration. With a gesture like that, I'd love your help!

If you really want to make the trip, I'd love to see you. Send me a PM and we can work out the details.

    Re: pm

Don't take it too hard. When I try to explain to people what I do for a living, I find that telling them I am a "Professional Geek" is the most widely understood.
