It happened about 35 odd years ago.Got to know Paul,as his brother started dating my daughter.Big Ford fan,all kinds of parts,mechanic by trade.My GS at that time was 3475 pds,plus me in it.His car was a Ford fairlane at 2900,with him in it.Needless to say,I cooked him.My 455,it was original,with add ons,like cam,headers,torque converter and port work done by Gessler.These are steel heads,with the original 70 carb.He had a 427,aluminum heads,Holley ,don't know what also.So my daughter did marry his brother and on the wedding day,there he is sitting with a bunch of friends.The maitre D comes around with a speaker,so all can congratulate the Bride and Groom.It comes to him,and laughing like a what? all his talking about how he is going to kill that stage car with his race engine.He's exchanging parts,so the 427 mixed with parts from a 429,it will become an umbitable race motor at 428.They are all laughing out loud,its all still on tape,So a couple weeks later I get a call,its Friday evening,my car is resting,I'm going out with my convertible.He asks if I was ready for him,and I said no,I have to check the car to make sure all is right.I knew you would chicken out,his words.So I tell him,OK its on.All by myself,he has a bunch of friends with him,one of them is his cousin,a high performance mechanic.We had th 1/4 all marked on this isolated spot,we go by the light,at the green we take off.He has me by some 3 car lengths,but by the 1/8 of a mile I catch him and lead him by 3 lengths.He goes to check the timing,and whatever also,then he comes tome asking if I want to go again.I said,OK.We return to the light,we take off,this time he has me by 2 cars.At the end I had him by 5-6 cars .Back to the spot to check again what's wrong with the car.The cousin,the high performance mechanic said to him: I know what's wrong! Paul turns with a smile and asks: what is it? His car is faster.Bruno,laughing.
