I feel your pain, Bob. I have been screwed by someone I thought was a friend, too. I was only taken for $5000 but that was a lot to me. My "friend" died before I could confront him about it, so I will have no resolution. You should keep after Jimmy until he makes this right. He knows he screwed you and if he is any kind of man, he will realize what he did and refund your money, including shipping.

Bob, I only know of Jimmy and have never heard anything bad & I don't know you personally exc. on here and we're friends on FB and have commented on ea. other's Buick & non-Buick related threads so I feel I know you a little better and it was obvious to me from your posts, for probably the past year or so, exactly what you were looking for and I believe Jimmy is on FB as well and considering the small contingent of '66 guys, I'd not only think that Jimmy would've also been well aware of what you were looking for, but I would also tend to be more trusting of someone well known in our community (I tend to be overly trusting anyway) and even not knowing him, I would've also been more lax in my due diligence so while big of you to "man-up" and accept responsibility, I'd give you somewhat of a pass.

I believe you were even pretty clear that you didn't want to buy a car from the east coast for this very reason and I'd assume you relented on that because of who you were dealing with. Of course "rust-free" should have the same meaning universally, but to someone in the Northeast it could be interpreted differently than to someone in the Northwest.

I bought my Stage 1 4-sp. from a very well respected board member and while it was only 2 hrs. away & I was able to see it in person and it was not a "done" car, I was not as diligent in going over the car with fine tooth comb & checking #'s, etc. as I would've been with someone not as well known to our community.

On the other hand, I sold my previous "rust free" Stage 1 4-sp. to a board member, who's buddy insisted that they fly down & look @ it prior to him purchasing it and while I told him everything I knew about the car, when he got here he said it still exceeded his expectations. His buddy slid under the car and after about 20 seconds was quite satisfied.

I hope this gets resolved and it's a shame you had to take it public. I know you were really excited about getting it.

  4. Thats exactly why I bought a car from east coast, we had been discussing me buying this car off and on for a while and he was fully aware I only wanted a car with absolutely zero rust. I even had him shoot a picture of the battery tray area of the core support. I was very upset when he informed me of the tiny rust hole and wanted to cancel the deal then, it was only after he refused and basically threw a tantrum that I accepted the fact that I was stuck with the car. I am thinking the $$ was already spent and he didnt have it to return to me.

If I was to buy a car from someone I didn't know I would fly out there if I was to buy a car here from a member I would believe them.......I got my GS from the lead of chris the crack spider...the owner wasn't a member he did send me a bunch of pics and info...but I did fly out there to make the deal..

I wanted to keep my yap shut, but ive been following along since long since well before this arrangement went sideways, so if we're "interpreting" deals, here's mine. (And I suck at keeping my yap shut...)

Sure, there are various "interpretations" of "rust free", but this was bold face lying backed up by careful photography to avoid less than desirable facts. I always thought it'd be cool to go to the "Buick bash" Jim throws every year, but this has disgusted me. I know there are two sides to every story, but his silence speaks volumes, and I don't think there's any way to justify the condition of that car versus the questions posed and answered by him. There's no honor amongst theives, and this is theft. My grandfather always taught me a man's word is his honor, his honor rests on his word, and the measure of a man depends on just that. In this particular deal, this man exhibited no honor. Disgusting behavior. A known commodity in our hobby tarnished for a lousy buck.

Jim, I implore you to make it right. Give the man his money back and take back the car you misrepresented. This was wrong. Period.

Jim - you may need to add those who have your stuff; i.e engine crate, to the list of those you don't trust. The good news is that the engine and transmission are in the car as of today. Should be running in the next day or so, need to pick up some odds and ends. Sorry to hijack...

I hope this gets resolved quickly. There are always two sides, different views/ideas of condition, over eager buyers not seeing what they don’t want to see, not paying due diligence and asking for detailed pictures of EVERYTHING, and of course misrepresented cars. Jimmy has had a long standing good reputation in the community so hope this gets resolved. Personally if I were Jimmy I would move to clear this up off this thread not add to it. He only owes the buyer an answer.

  9. Keith,
in all reality my questions and his answers posted in this thread leave nothing to question. I asked plain and simple questions and he gave plain simple answers. there were no phone calls or other types of communication other than text messages because I am hearing impaired and dont hear on the phone and also I wanted no misunderstandings. he is flat out denying even his own words on Facebook and tells me to just fix the car.. I didnt get what was sold to me and he refuses to make it right. he has no integrity in my opinion.

I was thinking about you the other day, not because I am worried at all about the engine crate, but because I am considering buying custom engine/transmission shipping boxes for my stuff. I have wanted to for years, but the issue is they are expensive, and have to be returned, I can do it with fastenal shipping now, but the though occured to me that I might have to charge a refundable deposit, to encourage prompt return...

Not worried about your 350 crate, it's going to a guy in OH straight from you, and he is not quite ready for it...

    ---------------

Now back to the issue at hand.

Let me say, that number one, I deal with a lot more folks than most of you ever will, and on big dollar items, like buying cars.. and selling engines..

THE VAST MAJORITY of folks that I have encountered in nearly 20 years of running this board, while also owning TSP, have been the greatest.. total "salt of the earth" types.. I have customers give me things all the time, I mean things like Dominator carburetors.. worth easily 2-300 bucks... . Most of the people in the Buick community, if not generous to a fault, are certainly fair minded straight-shooters ..

But, I run a business... and I treat it as such... I don't start projects without a down payment, nor do I ship product without full payment. It's has nothing to do with me "trusting" or "not trusting" the individual customers.. it has everything to do with good business practices, and protecting myself from the "---- happens" part of life.. Case in point, we just had a board member die, who I was all set to start building a Tomahawk here for.. I had his block, and could have easily spent 1K doing sublet labor on it.. while waiting for his parts and a down payment to be delivered from the west coast..

He died in the meantime, 64 year old guy, so it's not like it was something anyone even considered happening.

Now had I "trusted" him, and started in on the machine work, I would be out 1K right now, because I sure as hell am not going to go after the widow for the money because I started a project too early.

I treated it like a business deal, and protected myself from the unknown.

That is what I wish you guys would do.. I know everone wants to trust their facebook/internet friends, but the simple fact is that if you do that, on big dollar deals, your going to get burned, sooner or later. Wish that was not true, but it is.

What I am trying to say is best expressed by the saying we had in the 80's, when dealing with Russia and treaties.....

    "Trust, but Verify"..

I hate to see stuff like this happening, and it's why we almost did not have any parts/cars buying or selling on the board here.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

I recently purchased a set of center caps from a member. I mailed him a check (I don't have PayPal) and told him to ship them after the check cleared. He doesn't know me, so I had no expectations of receiving the caps until he was certain of payment. I received them as described.

This isn't really a case that should be tried in the court of public opinion, but Jims past good reputation on this board is part of the reason that this deal even happened, so in my opinion, the board members deserve to be made aware of what happened. That said, there is no doubt that this car was misrepresented to Bob, and he has acknowledged that he should have done a better job of vetting the car before the purchase. I can't understand why Jim is doubling down on his position, but it sure seems suicidal to his credibility on this board.
My suggestion is for Bob to absorb the $1800 shipping costs and consider that tuition at the School of Hard Knocks. Sell the car to someone that is willing to take it as is and then have Jim make up the difference to Bob up to the original purchase price. Everyone would lose a little, but nobody would be totally screwed. If Jim does this and accepts responsibility for his faults in this deal, I, and I believe many others would respect the gesture and move on.
The rest of us should take this lesson to heart and follow wise business principles.
