It Always Seems To Be The Brake Lights and Turn Signal...

There was aluminum foil stuffed in behind the fuse itself. The fuse box is probably sold with the main engine harness right?

Step 1- check the fuses!:Dou: Diagnostics 101. Check powers and grounds. Get yourself a good digital volt ohm meter and get familiar with how to use it. Without it, all your going is just guessing.

The fuse panel is part of the instrument panel harness. No need to replace the whole harness. At worst, pull the fuse panel down and repair it. Or cut the curcuit out of the fuse panel and run it through an inline fuse holder.

Thanks, Jason. I checked the fuses earlier, but that's when I was using the visual checking system. I just found this problem last night when I pulled the actual fuse out. I'll try to repair it this weekend, and get the dvom.

    Try www.Lectriclimited.com

I know GM sold them separately NOS because I have one.

I've been using the dvom today and I want to check the grounds but I'm not sure where the brake and directional grounds are. My schematics don't tell it just has a little symbol that stands for ground. :Do No: I'll be checking connections and I'll be back to check the forum in a bit.

Right now I seriously feel like buying all new harnesses and just rewiring the whole car. I can't seem to find anything out. I'm lost.

Is the rear lisence plate bulb working? Are the rear marker lights working? If themarker lights are but the lisence plate is not, you might want to check the plug where the rear tail lamp harness plugs into the body. Its behind the bumper on the left side. Almost sounds like it fell out.

Do you have power at both sides of the fuse now after your repair?

Did you try jumping out the brake light switch?

Are the grounds good at the tail lamp bulbs? Do you have continuity between the black wires at the bulb sockets and the body? The black wire for the tail lights should ground on the rear bumper.

Dont get confused. Trace the wiring back from the sockets and find out where your losing power.

dark green is right directional/ brake
    yellow is left directional/ brake
brown is tail lights (which are common to all 4 bulbs) and lisence plate lamp
black is ground from sockets to rear bumper.

Tail lights work, but license plate does not. Would a bad bulb there be the root of all this? I can't find it on the schematics.

I have power on both sides of the fuse.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "jumping," sorry.

There is continuity at the tail light contacts, but not the directional or brake light contacts. I will check that ground now.

Thanks Jason. I really am sorry if I'm frustrating you, or anyone else, with my lack of know-how, but I really do appreciate the help. I'll post an update asap.

Find the brake light switch. Its at the top of hte brake pedal. You might have to remove the plastic piece of trim under the column.

The brake light switch has a connector with two wires- orange which comes off the fuse box (that wire should have 12v on it) and white. When the brake pedal is depressed, the switch connects the two wires together and turns on the brake lights.

Disconnect the plug and take a short piece of wire and connect the two wires together. Your "jumping" out the switch. See if the brake lights are on with the jumper wire installed

I just jumped the brake wires and got nothing.

OK, we're getting somewhere! Now, the big question...does the orange wire have power to it?

Well gentlemen, I am extremely happy to say that after two weeks of frustration and bothering you guys to death, there is a happy ending and the Skylark is road legal again. :TU: What was the final cause to this problem? I pinpointed it down to the fuse box, replaced all the fuses (just thought I should do it and save myself time in the future), de-jerry rigged some fuses, and cleaned off some corrosion which I didn't see on my first few inspections of the contacts. Everything is good again thanks to dreesh, Jim, and Jason. I'm truly sorry for bothering you guys the past few weeks, but I am thankful for all the help. Though it may not have been much in the end, I sure did learn a heck of a lot. I guess the moral of the story is make sure it's not something as simple as the fuse (yes I know Jason preached many times to check those, and I'm sorry for not doing it as extensive as I should have), and if you are going to sell your car either de-jerry rig it, or at least tell the buyer what is jerry rigged and why. Again, thanks a lot for putting up with me and hopefully I can pay the knowledge forward someday! I am glad to say this thread is now closed. :beers2:

Thats great news Matt! Im glad it was a simple fix in the end. I kinda felt bad for you. I could sense the frustration you were going through.

Its no bother at all. Im happy to help if I can. I love a good challenge. Keeps my knowledge sharp. :TU:

I do have one more question. My lights and electronics flicker (get brighter) when I get on the gas- what gives?
