Is + wire that goes to coil a resistor wire?

Pertronix. Everyone recommends it gets 12 volts constantly (cranking and running). I understand it will "work" with the original resistor wire, but I will not wreap the full benefit of its output at 9 or so volts "running" as I would at a full 12v.

Have you done your research on Pertronix? I recall seeing some less than positive experiences posted here on the board.

Yeah, some less than positive, some very positive, you know the deal. Ask 10 people get 12 answers. You could go crazy after a while. :Dou:

I'll post my feedback if I run into any problems.

    Ken,

Just to help you go a little more crazy, I ran Pertronix for years on the resistor wire with no trouble. I did recently switch back to points triggering the MSD 'cuz my ancient pertronix and its flying magnet setup was getting a little long in the tooth. Things weren't looking so hot in there anymore with what I thought was questionable old quality control (I've actually had to take it apart and reglue those magnets back in place in the past). Regardless the system itself never let me down from an electronics standpoint.

All the points do in the system now is create a ground to trigger the MSD. At first I was skeptical; now I like the simplicity and easy fix if something goes afoul. And there is one less wire.

    Best of luck to ya.

Yeah, I need luck I think. I read all of the above. I found where the resistoe wire t's into the coil wire. Everythin I thought was fine. Then I have a dead battery. I buy a new battery from NAPA. It is also dead, but dated only a couple months old. So I put it on a charge. Charges up pretty fast, just a few hours to get to zero.

I go to crank the engine a NOTHING. I hear a relay, but that's it. Oddly, with ignition on, the coil read 12+ volts with a meter, when I went into crank position, the coil voltage went down to like 8v. WTF? I thought it was supposed to be just the opposite of that?? I am ready to drive my GS into the ocean. (or push it)

2 dead batteries? Well, you may have 12 volts at the coil with the ignition on, but the starter load will drag it down to about 10 volts if the battery is fully charged. Sounds like a weak battery if it drags it down to 8. Voltage drop is normal while cranking.

Larry, just curious, are those barb connectors available anywhere?

Thanks Larry. You are amazing. I googled every vendor I could think of. NOBODY had these. Ironically, my buddy has a 69 GMC truck with the exact same connectors and he was not using half his bulkhead connector as his son is using it for dukes of hazzard practice, so I stole like 4 of his.

Thanks so much though, I took the part# down.!:TU:

Took me about a half hour of searching the NAPA catalog, page by page to find it. I knew they had it though. Anyone wanting to find that part should go to www.napaonline.com Then select, search NAPA catalog, then check part number, and put in NW 725145 (space between NW and 725145) My link in the other post expired.

It sure does take patience I suppose. Something I was blessed with in limited fashion. :Dou:

I have another electrically related question. You know that heavy duty grounding washer for the negative battery cable that goes to the block? There's a guy on ebay that has them for like $5, but he's charging $5 to ship them. You can literally chuck it in an envelope and stick a stamp on it and mail it. I refuse to pay that shipping. I would rather pay $8 somewhere else.

I looked in Napaonline for that and all the fastener and specialty auto hardware parts stores I can find and nothing.

I think this is what I need right?

Is there anyplace you can get the pink resistor wire? I want to set up an emergency wire set that I can just plug in if the 6AL goes down. A restistor wire would make a much neater package.

Also, in my experience if it is a pink wire it is probably a resistor wire. If you strip it back you will see that the strands look like steel not copper.

My resistor wire had a white cloth insulation to it. It looked different from all the other wires in the harness. Older cars had a different or regular wire with an external ballast resistor mounted on the firewall or the coil. The resistor wire superceded the need for an external ballast resistor.

    Ken,
That's called a star washer. Put that term in Google.

You should be able to find that in any Sears Hardware store.
