I want to talk about an idea I have for an intercooler setup and get some feed back on it. I have a subaru forester xt which is the turbo model, and I love the scoop on it. So I was thinking about using a stage 2 scoop on the buick and mounting a top mount intercooler of a subaru in it so it pushes air in like my suby does.do you guys think that would work, I love the ken bell scoop on the stage 2.

    Hello,

It would be helpful to know a bit more about your car, what kind of forced induction setup you will be using, and perhaps your name so we know what to call you. My DD is a WRX. I see a couple of issues. One is, all of our cars have very little room between the hood and the top of the motor, especially with a big block, so I think you'd have a rough time making it fit. The second issue is, the placement of the top mount on Subarus makes them very prone to heat soak, which our large, warm running motors would only exacerbate. Hopefully that helps.

Sorry I forgot its a new thread I started. My name is JT and I have a 350 with a single turbo. I have had a wrx and now an xt forester and other turbo vehicles. I understand the heat soak but being a larger engine compartment and placing the intercooler part way in the hood scoop I was thinking it might be ok. But thats why I put the question out there. If you think about subies there have been plenty with high horsepower with top mounts. Now my thought would be from an sti because my forester top mount is way smaller. Also as of now im only running around 4 psi.

Way to small of an intercooler, either do air to water or front mount air to air, Frozenboost.com has plenty of budget friendly air to water setups as well as air to air, Treadstone has very nice units aswell , or just an AIS alky setup will be just as good

I suggest a snow water/ meth intercooling kit they are reliable and boost referenced... Unless you have forged pistons and rods in that 350 i would suggest keeping the boost under 14 psi. I am going to use the snow kit and have it start at 5 psi and go up till my max boost setting of 20 psi.... If i go any higher than 20 i will use my big air to air intercooler that can support 1200 hp as proven by dyno and track testing.

I like water/ meth intercooling because it allows for direct clean routing of the boosted air. Setting up an intercooler in a low boost setup is not worth it in my opinion. Not when the water meth kits work so well.

Ok well that seems to be my answer then. To small and ill have to research the alky setup. I have never had one. Thanks guys for all the info I really do appreciate it.

heres a cool product for sure

if you want something simple just go with an intercooler from Treadstone
    http://www.treadstoneperformance.com/view.phtml?f_cat=Intercoolers:+Complete+Intercoolers&f_start=20

Top mount intercooler would be cool, I've thought about it, but havent really looked into it as much as just using a front mount
pros would be snappier throttle response due to less pipping, doesn't block flow to radiator, good for small turbos like to4e/62-1
con is its prone to heatsoak while at idle(engine heat rises to intercooler)
    possible hood clearence issue
most likely harder to work around intercooler when doing enginebay work

front mount you can go with bigger core, increased cooling. less prone to heatsoak.
cons, more plumbing, possible more lag, possible more prone to dmg since in frontend

another option could be a fenderwell mounted intercooler
but frontmount is easiest and usualy able to get biggest coresize and best cooling from this location versus the others

side note for intercooler cores and endtank locations

    vertical cores get more flow
horizontal cores ..less flow but more cooling effect

Vertical entanks have harder time evenly distributing air charge throughout core
Horizontal end tanks allow more evenly cooling throughout core

get the thickest core that'll fit
horizontal endtank design is a given
if max flow is important go vertical core..if cooling is more of importance go with horizontal core

ducting made to channel air to rad and intercooler will be better then adding efans to each..

an alternative to the snow injection kit is
    http://www.alcohol-injection.com/en/19-universal
    http://www.alcohol-injection.com/en/6-tanks

    or

    Trunk mounted meth/water injection kit
    http://www.alcoholinjectionsystems.com/Trunk-Mount-Systems/c37/index.html

fender mounted and use your stock windshield washer reservoir
    http://www.alcoholinjectionsystems.com/Fender-Mount-Kits/c22/index.html

cheapest liquid solution is Winterized window washer fluid! ..reg washer fluid wont be worth while and meth juice is more expensive\

theirs also cryo cooling via co2 too

Wow ask and you shall receive lol. That's a lot of info I have to look thru.I know it sounds stupid but I like the way the stage 2 hood scoop looks thats why I thought about a top mount for function not just show. Thats why I was gathering feed back on a top mount.

If that be the case use the stage 2 scoop to serve as just an engine/intake cooling source the for simplicity just use a Meth kit meth is $4.50 a gollon and will last a good while, I used straight meth in my GN ran 26 to 28lbs of boost ALL time daily drove it as it was my only wheels with stock pistons and iron heads, but at your mild boost level I wouldn't expect too much of a gain

theirs also water to air intercoolers which is better then air to air even with warm water..something like 14x better then air to air
if youre stuck on top mount def go with water to air intercooler

When you have time read the section on intercooling in my article:

Thanks for the articles I did read them. I definitely am learning more then I thought I knew. One of my first cars was a turbo talon with the side mount and now another subie with a top mount so I have not actually had a front mount. I am liking the water/meth idea but what is usually the most psi when running those? As of now I have no plan to go more then 4psi until I'm good and tuned. I have my gauges coming this week then I'm gonna be able to see my afr I also am going to be trying to figure out the timing.

Ok so I have been doing the research on the water meth kits and I am blown away by the improvements on everything it gives. So now my question would be, which kits do you guys prefer? And im still a little confused on where the nozzle goes? One site was talking about pre turbo and other are under carbs. I thought it would just be in piping before carb.

Most people just add the meth before the carb. In general most people have the meth start spraying at 4 PSI and it is safe up to about 18 PSI which is more than most engines can handle for HP... If you have stock rods then limit the boost to 12 PSI as the stock rods are limited to about 600 hp.

not sure if it was mentioned but plate/bar intercooler is better then a tube/fin one

i'd go with the trunk mounted one .less added weight to frontend..but they all cool intake charge
dual or tripple spray nozel is better then single..just think of how a carb better atomizes fuel better then injectors
I think people have also used the lil halo mist ring to work with washer fluid to cool intercooler instead of co2

the meth kit I just installed I machined a piece of 5/8 alum round bar and drilled and tap the hole with a 1/8 npt tap. welded it up to the intercooler piping. I installed the nozzle 6 inches before the throttle body. Do not reinvent the wheel.. what is your goals of the car, hp the motor can handle, what type of fuel system, and most important , how much realistic money you are willing to spend. It all matters.. we can advise you on the best places to spend it.. CSU built my blow thru carb but at $1k for a carb they are not cheap.. run a Extreme Velocity carb hat compared to those ebay hats you see. what size turbo you running? how many mm is the compressor and exhaust? what size ar ? buy a nice fast a/f ratio moniter. $500 I have ever spent..

Thanks for all the great info guys. I have no real hp plans I honestly built it to see if I could. I have gauges on the way I definitely understand the need for afr gauge. im just on to tunning but I have a lot to learn on that. I am pretty sure im gonna go with a meth kit.
