I'm in the process of removing parts off my 350-4 to make it easier to paint and when I got to the (I'm not sure what to call it) depression in the intake manifold where the choke thermal device is located, I removed the cover and also the cover that fills the hole in the intake manifold but the gasket is bad and I'll need to replace it when l put everything back together. I'll need a new gasket but don't know where to get one, I don't even know what name to give it. Can I use some RTV if I can't find the gasket? I attached a photo that shows the area to the left of the duct tape. Thanks, Brad
I believe this has been discussed before, and they don't make a gasket for the choke stove, you may have to make one. Whatever you do, make sure that its sealed, that metal "stove" that dips into the manifold intersects the exhaust crossover passage, and if its not sealed you'll have a nasty exhaust leak
I made a block off plate from I think 1/4 inch plate and used some orange hi temp rtv and some big washers on the bolts to spread out the load and keep it tight. Any thinner than 1/4 will blow out. I also converted to electric choke as my intake had none off the hot air stuff left.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. If I decide to make a new gasket is there a preferred gasket material that everyone uses? Thanks!
I would use something like this, http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.-Gasket/72...MIuoWajoz21wIVwxsYCh39eQ4pEAQYASABEgKH0PD_BwE It needs to be able to withstand exhaust heat.
At least 3 different 350 intakes for 72. No AIR, with AIR, and with AIR and EGR. Use header gasket material.
Yes the Skylark is a '72 with a EGR. The car had air but has not worked for many years so I removed all air components and installed a/c delete cover. I just removed all radiator hoses this evening and will be installing new ones. I found that the thermostat housing is done for so I order a new one. I guess I should also replace the belts too.... Thanks Underdog for the suggestion on the header gasket material.
Use red high temp form a gasket and be sure to let it set up over nite before firing the motor. Also while things are apart if you do not know if all of that rubber fuel line can stand up to ethanol cut fuel then you should replace it now before it starts breaking down and causing your Carb to flood out on you!
All air conditioning components have been removed. Thanks for the tip about high temp form a gasket, I think I'll go that rout. I plan on repkacing all fuel and vacuum lines. One question, I work at a Truvalue hardware store and we sell fuel line which I bought for when I start to put the motor back together. Is all fuel line the same or should I onlt buy fuel line from a auto parts store. Mmmm, I think thats what Stevem was trying to tell me! Thanks
AIR =air injector reactor or some crap like that AC = air conditioning 2 things not needed on a muscle car. ( at least not in 1972)
So far I've removed the AC system and smog pump. I'm thinking about removing and capping the EGR valve and the TCS solenoid but the car runs so good I'm not sure I'll remove them. I've also picked up the correct distributor from EBay. Thanks to Larry I found out I have the wrong distributor so I got the correct one before I power time it. The distributor has no side to side play but I'll need to take it apart to rebuild it just to make sure it's in good shape before I install it. One more question, I'm thinking about pulling the radiator shroud, Radiator and fan to get better access to the front of the engine for painting. If I loosen the trans cooling line do I need to bleed the line or just hook it back up again? Also I went to the parts store for a new carburetor base gasket and the one they had did not have four holes just one and I'm not sure I want to buy it even though the sells man told me it doesn't mater. Is the true? Thanks!
Loosening trans lines won’t hurt anything no bleeding needed . You may want a line wrench so not to round off line . Get correct gasket for carb. Contact Mark at Quadrajet Power if you need one. He has the parts.
Ahh, parts store idiots. My favorite people to deal with. Quadrajet Power will have what you need. Their website is easy to navigate as well.
x2 on the line wrenches. Go to your local hardware/tool store and pick up a set of SAE line wrenches. 1/2", 9/16", etc.
I sent an email to Quadrajet Power and recived a very quick reply. I guess the carburetor base gasket is different on me car then the factory. The standard is a four hole but what I took off is a three hole. Thr people at Quadrajet Power gave me the correct part number for the correct gasket but the they added that if the car was running good with the one I took off it would be safe to use the same one again which is what I'm going to do and placed the order. Here's a photo of the gasket I took off. Also her's a photo of the 350 with the valve covers off, I'm pepping them for paint. I've gotten some good tips for the guys in the paint forum.
