My car has recently started that "chuffing" exhaust leak sound from under the hood. Exhaust manifolds look OK, and they're tight. Exhaust looks tight as well. It sounds like it's coming from under the intake, which probably means that the aggrivating little insert whatchamacallit that goes there is rusting out. Not surprised, it's been 43 years. Going to pull it tonite to check to see if it's a round or square one for sure. Anyone know where I could get a replacement insert? Local parts stores look at me like I'm insane when I ask for stuff. Stock 1960 401/4bbl intake. Thanks for your help.
Check with : http://www.buick-parts.com/ CARS--buick parts. They had one of those plates for my '55 ! Brand new, N.O.S., and affordable! Good luck! Zach--
Yup CARS is the place. Intake manifold plugs for $10-15 depending on application. BTW, 401 plug is round.
Another way to plug that pesky bugger off, being as you have to pull the intake off anyway, is to use the intake gasket from Postons that has steel blockoff plates. Blocks off the exhaust crossover passageways between the head and intake. Yes, I bought an intake plug from CARS also, but you can try to measure the hole exactly, and buy a freeze plug based on the size measurement.
