From the archives, a 1995 vid of my blue '66 at Atco!
This was my best run ever, a 13.41 at 101.8 mph.
60 ft, with wheelspin (watch the speedo) was a 1.97,
    5.57 330ft
    8.58 660ft
    11.12 990 ft
    0.468 reaction time (oops)

    It's a 425 with Isky 310 cam, '66 Q-jet, and Kustom headers. St400 trans and 4.11 12 bolt rear.
It's a full street car weighing around 3900 with driver. No 'race' suspension mods except for the worn-out front shocks.
The fat 1-1/4" front sway bar and front discs aren't optimum for the drags either.
Shift at 5000 with about 5500 in the traps.

I've had better 60 ft times, (1.92 vs this 1.97) and 330 ft times (5.53 vs this 5.58), so a 'perfect' run should be at least a 13.3.
I've run 13.6 with a pair of 500 cfm AFB's. The Q-jet has noticably more power at higher rpms.
I feel with thinner steel head gaskets, roller rockers and some suspension work, this would be a 12 second car.
I can't believe it's been nearly 18 years since this run! Time to get back out there.
Anyway, Crank up the sound! and enjoy:TU:

haha, that speedo jump is pretty funny. I've wanted to video my speed during a pass but haven't. Mine only goes up to 80mph though and the car traps at 108mph

Thanks for posting this Walt, Its the best thread all winter:TU: Just what I need to get motivated. You need to put your roller rockers on that car and see what happens. Thanks:TU:

Walt, I wonder why you have better top in with the q-jet? Think it is the velocity of the single carb? I think your right, A couple of things and your into the 12s:TU:

    Thanks guys!
I've had this car forever. I built the 425 for another '66 when I was a teenager, and put it in the blue car when I bought it in '82.

Bob, I'd guess that a pair of 500's are just too small, but it's surprising a Q-jet rated at 750 cfm makes more power. I suppose it could be a jetting issue too. But this car always ran well without any noticeable problems.
Roller rockers will definitely help the Isky cam since it's only 0.440" lift with the stockers.

Still cant get the link to work! Ever re-installed quick time, etc...! Damn! I'll try my daughter's computer later tonight.

I'm with Walt..I dont' know why these engines love the Q-Jet, but they sure do. But I dont know if it's all about CFM, because I have tried my 750 and 800 with identical calibration back to back, without any real difference (but that was when I had electrical problems, I'll try again this spring)

A good part of it might be in manifold design, although I always thought the basic design was an AFB with a different carb pad.

I got the itch too... took mine out with the G-Tech yesterday... even with no suspension set up, the short shift and some wheelspin it ran 14.8 and for some reason I've been running about 2 mph faster. The G-Tech measures at the exact end of the 1/4, while the track takes an average of the last xx feet (I think) - all I know is the G-Tech is usually about 2 mph higher than track speeds, and it was reading 96 mph yesterday and 95 for Saturday's runs. I've been running 90-92 mph for my best runs at the track, so I guess I shouldnt be surprised by 93-94 this spring? I wasnt even shooting for that....

I can only dream of going 101!

    Hey there Walt!

I can't watch the video here at the office, cause the internet is restricted where we can't stream anything. However I will definitely give it a go when I get home.

It's funny to see you post a vid from back in the 90's. Your ears must have been burning this weekend. I was out at Don's on Saturday and we were talking about ya. Don was trying to remember back when the '66 was last broken down and freshened up to go racing. I think he came up with 1994. Almost 20 years ago and the old Nailhead is still running like a champ. But in trying to remember when the last time was a story about you and Don at the Nats came up. Somehow we always end up back on the story of you and Don out in the parking lot of the hotel working on your cars cause you both broke them at the track on the same day. He was talking about the Chevelle guy that had the parts yard there in town, or something like that, and was able to hook you both up with the parts you needed to get back on the track.

Oh, and just an FYI, we got to work on the '66 this weekend. There is a local drag event coming up in April that we plan to attend. Gonna freshen up the trans for that, then once that even goes by we are pulling the engine to freshen it up too. Cause if things go as planned, Don and I have our minds set on making it to the GS Nats this year!! Sure hope this plan comes together. Would sure be cool meet some of the V8Buick crowd.

It was recorded using a 8mm camcorder on a tripod strapped in the back seat with seatbelts!

Johnny, at the GS Nats, I would often hang out with Don and the new Orleans gang. good times! One of his buddies brought some homebrew.:beers2: to enjoy in the shade at the edge of the pits.
In '86 I broke a driveshaft and Don broke his rear. I got a too-long driveshaft from a local guy and Mark and Engie got me back on the road for the 650 mile drive home. We had to cut it with a hacksaw and had it welded back together at a local gas station.

My last trip to the GS Nats was '93. That's where I first track tested the Q-jet. It tied the 13.6 I ran with the 2x4's.
Don's 66 was killer back then ..... he broke into the 11's with the roller-cammed Nailhead. The fastest the Nats have ever seen.
Great to hear it's gonna be back. Hope you'll be taking some video for us!

    Video.....ABSOLUTELY!!!

I hope to take plenty of pictures and video as well. I was going to get a good burnout video of the '67 this weekend, but when we fired it up and Don backed it out of the shop I noticed something was leaking. Apparently the new fuel pump decided to crap out on us and was leaking from the seam where the bowl attaches to the top half.

It will be a couple weeks before I can get a running video of the '66. Parts will hopefully be in this week for the trans so we can get it back together next weekend, but the converter won't be ready till next week, so it will be the following weekend before the trans gets put back in the car. But as soon as it gets popped back off again I will see if I can get a quick teaser video for ya.
