Ok the 80s are long gone.. What the heck do we use for lube nowadays? Use to be able to buy a 1 o2 2 ounce tube of IPL

For the time being I use a spot of ARP assembly lube.

I do remember you need to lube the points literally every 2 weeks.Mileage matters... the follower is what need the lube.. I did forget to lube the points one time had to reset the points in a 50-60 miles I pulled the dipstick got lube that way that time.

We'd use a very light smear of wheel bearing grease. That's how I was taught in the late 1970s. Not that many cars have serviceable wheel bearings these days....

    Niehoff NL-2

I've had this tube for 40 years.....will outlast me.
It stays put and if it gets on points it won't burn.

I have done the same without issue. A sort of multipurpose high temp brake/wheel bearing grease. Maybe it isn’t the best but for the amount most of us drive our cars I am sure it is fine.

I recall it was a dark grease for the non-felted points. The grease goes on the "leading" side of the cam block, so it slowly is drawn to the cam as it rotates.
There was a dark heavy oil lube used for the point cam block with the felt wick.
The lube was in a small capsule.

    The Niehoff lube is opaque...
I see 3 tubes (package deal) for sale on EBAY....they would last someone 3 lifetimes....

Actually I still use the stuff fairly regularly repairing vintage outboard motors...

Petronix sucks. I had three of them fail, the M and H is much better. Life is too short to mess with points.

I've got Pertronix on two 67 Rivs and a 72 Opel. Never a problem in 20 years....

We were out tuna fishing about 30 miles off the Washington coast.. Pertronix died... Cleaned up a set of rusty points that were onboard. Made it back to port.. As far As Im concerned point will never let you down...

Jeez! I drove my breaker point equipped Chrysler 300 from Massachusetts to California and back (after spending a summer in LA) without ever pulling the distributor cap. I don't remember ever lubricating the points between point changes, usually at about 10,000 miles.

If your points have the felt wiper you shouldn't have to lube them very often.
