Ignition coil location

This might be a silly question, but where does the ignition coil locate on a Buick 350? The previous owner had installed a cheap HEI distributor (that didn't fit well) and the original coil bracket is gone. I'm changing out the crusty, worn HEI for a Pertronix billet distributor and a Flamethrower coil, and need to know which coil bracket to use and where to mount it.
    Thanks,

    Darron

I might have the stock coil bracket, but its only good if your coil is the same size as original.By the way,the coil bracket goes on the upper left [driver side] bolt of the alternator

IIRC to the right of the thermostat outlet there are hole(s) for bolts. they are a pita to get at. use whatever bracket fits the coil. I'm sure someone here would send you an original bracket, most of us have a box of them and too cheap to throw them away. I use GM HEI distributors in my toys, boats included (dont tell coast guard!) - works great, minimum of headaches, . personally not a fan of pertronix, they have left me stranded more than once. HEI- never had a problem, ever.

If you're using an aftermarket coil, follow their instructions. My MSD says do not install on the engine.

My mistake, it was my Mallory Promaster 29440 that said don't mount to the engine, not the MSD Blaster that I'm now using.

I second the NO PERTRONIX motion.
Pic of 4 week old Pertronix cap terminals on my 350 Chevy boat eng. The springs/ weights under cap were rusted bad also.
So much for their "marine grade plug & play distributor".

Another mounted coil pic. Now you have Larry''s and this one.:)

It's a circular bracket and bolts to the passenger side front of the head over the alternator/AC lower bracket (1 bolt).

I've had good success with a Pertronix distributor installed on another project, a 66 Dodge D100 panel truck. So that's why I went with Pertronix again for the Skylark. Hopefully I won't be proven wrong.
Thanks for the picture, Larry! As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words ...

So I've been looking for this darn coil bracket but can't seem to find one at my local parts stores (NAPA, Oreilly's, Advance) or online at Summit or Original Parts Group. I am finding plenty of brackets for a Ford application, would one of those work?

Sorry to hijack, but I've always heard that it is proper practice to mount the ignition coil straight up and down like i all of your pictures. However on one of my cars (1977 Lincoln) the stock bracket has the coil about 20 degrees from horizontal! Is there any proof that mounting a coil horizontally is bad? Something about the fluid in the coil not cooling the coil properly?

Best to mount them upright :D

GM, Chrysler, and Ford have all mounted round, oil-filled coils entirely sideways, or even upside-down.

I wouldn't spend ONE SECOND worrying about the angle the coil is mounted at. OTOH, I'd be very concerned about ANY coil coming from China. For example, MSD is known for a high failure rate on the Blaster II.

Sorry to hijack but can you recommend a good American made coil? I was planning on a Blaster II to go with an MSD box but if they are that bad I will pick something else . . .

As far as I know, the Flamethrowers are US made, one of the reasons I made that choice.
