Idle surge issue on qjet...smooths out if I tip in the secondary air flaps

Here's a video I made to try illustrating the issue I am having:

So the car runs like crap, surges at idle. Will nearly die at the stop light. BUT if I open up the secondary air flap 1/4" for a couple seconds, then let it go, the surge goes away. UNTIL I give it enough throttle to open up the secondaries again. I then have the same issue I was having before. Is this a secondary hanger or rod adjustment I need to make?

I have to two-foot it at the stop lights to keep it running, especially when it's hot. It died on me at a stop light last night, and took me several attempts to get it running again.

Didn't you get a fresh carb from Ken or Mark?

Pretty much anytime you gotta two foot it, it's needle and seat related. From my experience anyway, checked for Vac leaks?

I have blown out the carb twice...second time this morning. Mark built it. I have asked him about it on facebook, will see what he says too.

No vacuum leaks that I can find, and it does not have the symptoms of one. The thing that bugs me is that it clears up when I fiddle with the secondary air horn. It will stay running great until I get into the throttle enough to open the secondaries again....then runs like crap again.

push the secondary throttle plates closed manually and see if that stops it. sounds like they are sticking open slightly.

That was also suggested, and didn't seem to clear it up.

May be a problem with the secondary pull off valve It may need adjusted but it also might not be holding vacuum

Pull off valve is good...checked it this morning.

Have a close look at the hanger and plastic cam. Then unscrew the hanger and lift the secondary rods out. Make sure the tips look OK and aren't damaged or bent. Maybe one of the rods is hanging up in the jet.

Did u disassemble the carb to blow it out? Sounds like secondary enrichment to me.

Also make sure the secondary throttle blade return spring isnt broke and is installed properly, and that the secondary throttle blades arent hanging up on the carb base gasket!

I have taken it apart twice. I just spoke with Mark, and he said that he set up the carb with a rich idle for a little bit hotter cam, since I told him I would be running a 212. He made some suggestions for changes to make. I will report back when I have a chance to make those changes.

    No dice so far.

I want to give up on this thing. Ugh.

Did it ever run correctly since the rebuild? Were the throttle shaft bushings addressed?

You know Bob, I'm not sure it ever did. I had attributed the running issues with a poor tune...so I kept fiddling with it until I think I have isolated the carb.

I wish I had an extra good qjet to try, just to make sure it is the carb that is causing the problem. The car runs like a bat out of hell in all RPMs except idle.

Why did you send the carb out for a rebuild? Did it change anything? Throttle shaft play - I'm sure Mark would have at least looked at them if not installed bushings in them.

I just wanted to make sure it was done by someone who knows qjets. I bought the car in May, and pretty much immediately sent it to him. Did not really run the car until a week ago.

He did just mention to me that the power piston spring may be a little weak for the stock application, since he built it for my engine with a 212 cam. I don't have that installed yet. It's 100% stock, still. It makes sense. He is going to send a new spring that hopefully will fix the problem.

An easy way to test the spring, which you probably already know, is to make sure it is down at idle. Put a small screwdriver down the vent tube and either see if you can push the power piston down, or blip the throttle a couple of times and see if the screwdriver pops up. Does the exhaust smell rich at idle?

I can take a closer look at it tomorrow. It really didn't smell too bad. I know what lean smells like, and it wasn't that.
