    Evening guys.

    Swapping from a '72 350 to a '73 455(with '70 heads, intake & a '73 carb).

The '70 intake doesn't have the mounting holes for the idle stop solenoid, so my question is this: How or where can I mount the idle stop solenoid?

Any ideas or tips as always are appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Kyle

IF you use a Q-Jet a bracket hangs off the left front mounting bolt available from Ames.

Unfortunately I don’t have the mounting holes on my Q-Jet.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the front carb bolt, one of the four that hold the carb to the intake. I'm guessing you have one ...;)

    Ahh.

I’ve also seen the ones that actually mount to the carb in holes on the side.

The actual solenoid has a built on bracket. The solenoid will be the harder part to acquire. I just did a set-up on a '69 GTO that didn't come from the factory with one.

The idle stop solenoid is unnecessary unless everything is COMPLETELY stock. It’s function was to prevent run on by closing the throttle upon shut down. Leaner fuel mixtures and higher idle speeds made the engine prone to run on ( dieseling). I’ve seen it claimed that the purpose was to hop the idle speed with the A/C on, but I have yet to find that description in the chassis manual. You can certainly wire it to do that, but that was not it’s original purpose.

    Hmm. Thanks Larry.

Good possibility I may not even need to put it back on.

The '69 GTO had A/C from the factory & had NO idle control solenoid & in all the books it's stated it's supposed to have one. With the engine idling in gear when the A/C was turned on it would idle very slow like it should to the point it wanted to stall, but never did. Since the owner was the original owner & getting older, even though it didn't come from the factory with one, since he's getting older, we both felt it was nec. to install one to actually help it from stalling & from him getting flustered if it did.
Now this is a desirable car & year, a convertible, Ram Air 111 with 3.73 gears, his & her console shifter, etc.

Forgot to add. The bracket from Ames has the threaded screw holes in it for mounting a solenoid instead of on the carb. itself.

    Thanks Tom.

Can try it without & if worse comes to worse I can get the bracket & solenoid later. This is not a stock 455. So may not be the biggest deal.

    Kyle,

IF the car has A/C & a wilder cam than stock you may need it. In time we will see.

I run an idle solenoid in my 73 Stage 1, it didnt have one originally but it helps the idle with the compressor running, I wired it in series with the compressor clutch power. On my car , I'm using a later '78 M4M QJet, and the solenoid mounts to two threaded bosses on the side of the carb body. It wasnt the easiest to find, the common part # listing is wrong in most parts houses, I had to order it by sight, I believe it was listed as an '81.

I also believe that earlier 455's (70-71?) had the solenoid bracket mount to the intake bolt, in the same manner the throttle return spring hook does, only one hole back...thats a totally different set up that only works with the 4M Q-Jet.

Larry is correct . It had nothing to do with AC . Its purpose was to shut the throttle plates so the engine would not " AFTERRUN " or if you like " DIESEL " when it was shut off .

    Larry,
Thought I read somewhere - '71 Dealer Service Bulletin-perhaps, about the idle solenoid. My understanding was the idle solenoid, energized with ignition ON, stopped the carb. from going completely closed upon sudden deceleration. This prevented the engine from stalling.

The idle solenoid was used for multiple purposes/reasons.

No, you are confusing the idle stop solenoid with the carburetor dashpot.

In every shop manual I have it is referred to as " Idle Stop Solenoid " . You set Idle speeds , ( connected and un-connected ) at it and the carb idle screw . The difference could be from 150 RPM to 300 RPM depending on the car model and engine . You find it in the Emission section of the shop manuals . No mention of AC .

Well I think I'm going to go sans idle stop solenoid.

If my decision doesn't woik I can always put it back on easy peasy.
