Ok I have a 70 Buick skylark and always assumed it had an 8.2 10 bolt rear end under it. Today I crawled under it and I believe I was wrong. After looking at the rear, see attached photo I believe it has a Chevy 12 bolt under it. Am I correct? I was going to look for the axle stamping but have no idea where to look. Can you identify this axle and give me a clue where to look for the stamping? Thanks.
You are correct, it's out of a Chevelle. The axle code in on the front side of the right (passenger) side tube.
Yep 12 bolt GM Look on the front of the right (passenger) tube for the codes. My '68 was a Canadian build with a 12 bolt open.
Just curious. Where was your car built? There seems to be a pattern of some 1970’s coking out of one of the northeast plants with a 12-bolt Chevy. I think it was Framington,Mass.
yoU WILL HAVE A GOOD TIME GETTING THROUGH ALL THAT RUST PROOFING...LOL. Rats sorry for the caps. Why would you be upset... you can get parts for the chevy rear...The Buick 8.25 68-70 are a dying breed with fabcraft falling through with gears etc.
Good rear yah got Only thing I don't like about Chevy type rears are the C clip axle retention, it DOES make it easy to work on tho
Yes, but your rear is not a 12 bolt Chevy rear, it should be the big car 9 3/8 rear. It has a 12 bolt cover, yes.
Yup, my 70 came from the Framingham plant with a peg leg hiway geared 12 bolt chevy rear. I replaced it with a 71 8.5 posi with 3.42 gears. Still have the 12 bolt, may do something in the future with it. Jim
