Apparently my 71 LeSabre Custom 4 door hardtop is ultra rare. It has 54 louvers on the deck lid and louvers on the hood as well. They only did this for a little while at the very beginning of production, after that the used less deck lid louvers and no hood louvers at all. It is my understanding there were other changes as well and that there was a strike afterwards. So my car is pre strike and has louvers, the earliest one known to exist, it was built in August of 1970. Centurion said to me that my ride is so rare that I will never see another one. I wonder if even Bad Boattail in Europe has ever seen one. They have all the rare stuff there that I never see here. So now I can brag about my louvers, but probably almost as rare as the louvers are people who would care or be impressed. It will be my secret.

Well, its kind of the opposite here. Most of us drive automatics. Most classic American cars have an automatic transmission. Its rare to have a classic with a 3 speed or 4 speed manual.

Ok but auto vs manual is not part of the ultra rareness of my 71 LeSabre. Not sure why Boattail added that in. So if even Boattail has not seen a early 71 LeSabre/Centurion , indeed my car must be ultra rare... This is great! I have the earliest 71 LeSabre in existence!

Oh ok. No I wish though. Better mileage, less weight, no hp losses turning the trans. And rare. very rare... yes rare. Me likey!

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are these louvers good for anyway?
Obviously earlier and later models do not have them.

Congrats on your manual 3 Speed, Gary.... naaaa just kidding ;-)

they are good for making the car rare and cool, especially the early style. Beyond that, it doesn't look like they worked as well as the engineers thought they would. Probably they got fired. One year only, ever, and the early style is a few months production in the history of GM. Im taking it to the auction I know I can get a couple hundred thousand for this ride to put in some freaks collection.

You could never leave your louvre. But, I heard that there were 50 ways to do it. I'm going to start hitting all the junkyards to seek out vented decklids. I could make thousands!

no you have to have matching cowl tag also. Its not that simple sorry. You can try to clone but you know how that goes. No I got the real thing here. Numbers matching louvers, engine block date stamp to confirm. Its rare. Ultra ultra rare. I need to up my insurance coverages.

I was at a classic car dealership the other day and he used the term "tribute car" and I said "oh you mean 'clone'" and he looked at me wierd and said "ya, clone". I guess its a new politcally correct term now. I was ignorant of that fact. We always used to call them clones. I guess it has a negative connotation now like it is somehow fake. Oh wait. It is. haha.

yes we keep the tribute ones on display to lessen our liability from thieves and the real one is kept in an undisclosed location in south florida.

I thought ALL (Chev, BOP, Cad) 1971 full-size, GM models had louvered decklids as part of cab ventilation system. So, we're just getting spun up here about the quantity? I didn't know they made changes during production, interesting. 1972 Rivs instead had a louvered plate attached to the end of each door for ventilation system.

Exactly its the quantity of louvers on the deck lid and the presence of louvers on the hood which dissapeared altogether early in 71 after they made my car in Aug 1970. All with the cowl tag and numbers matching VIN. This is why my car is ULTRA rare. 265th one made. Probably the only one left in existence. Im willing to trade this car though for a run of the mill 1959 LeSabre/Invicta/Electra 2 door hardtop though, trades considered.
