    Jason,
We have plenty of gas here & no lines. Do you want to me by the bridge & I can bring down 4 or 5 cans of fuel? You have my number let me know, John

I guess heating oil is pretty uniform in price, Jason. We got a load on the 5th @ 3.79 per gallon - down from $3.94 last February. I know the legalities, but in an emergency it would be nice to have a small Diesel service truck. In a pinch, a Diesel can be run on he----- o--... uh, well, I can't really say, but you have $1,300 worth of it.

J - this site is pretty accurate

    http://www.gasbuddy.com/sandy/

shows stations that have/dont have gas and posts from people that have recently visited

... Kathy drives (visiting nurse) for a living - they hired a private tanker to come up from Alabama !! to fuel up the nurses cars every other day. Get this though - they're putting him up in Staten Island of all places, so he has to drive over the VZ bridge, then out to Hicksville (main office) then out to Medford (remote office) ... then back to Staten Island where the truck is under armed guard. Kathy is using my truck because her Saabaru burns 93 and the tanker only has 87. At least its free ...

He was 2 hrs late yesterday b/c he couldn't find diesel anywhere and burned up his own tanks going from S.I. to Medford and back :Dou:

The first snow of the season is falling here right now. Last year the first (and only) snow all winter was on Halloween. I don't know what a November 7th first snow means, but I can hardly wait to get to Florida. If the weather we are having is any indication of what is going on in New York and new Jersey, my heart goes out to those people.

It started out as a windy rain at about noon. Now it is a thick wet snow that is about an inch right now.
If it snows all night I don't know what we'll wake up to. This is B.S. !!!!!!!!

Thanks buddy! If I had to go back and forth to work in my own car, I would take you up on that. But its for the company's car. The 5 gallons I put in this morning got me through today. I still have an 1/8th tank. So Im hoping I can get through tomorrow's service call load with what I have left. Maybe come Monday, this craziness will be over:pray:

And to compound things, the power steering pump motor is going bad in the HHR. The steering goes from power to manual while your driving. If your not expecting it, its downright dangerous. I have to shut it off and restart the engine to get the steering back.

It is NASTY out. Windy, cold and snowing. But this weekend is supposed to be sunny and in the 60's:Dou: :error:

This pic was taken around 6a this morning. Its deceiving - thats about 6-7" of snow

3.5 hr train ride home last nite through the thick of the storm. They at one point actually shut down the Long Island Rail Road while I was on a train inbetween stations because of trees down on the tracks

click the bottom (-) minus button on the left to zoom out one level - Im where the A marker is ...

For reference, Larry and Moon are near where it says Queens, Bruno is near the K in Hicksville, and Jason is near the D in Brentwood

If you grab the map and pull it from right to left so that you can see where the end of L.I. is, Moon's other place is on the southern fork near where is says North Sea, and Steve's place is all the way out where is says Montauk

Alan or anyone else in that area how bad is the center of Hicksville?
We have friends there, and I have not been able to contact them as of yesterday.

The center of Hicksville is fine. I just spoke with Bruno. He still has electrical power. The weekend temperatures should hit the low 60's, and most if not all of this will be gone by then. This snow storm would be a minor inconvenience for most if not for Sandy softening us up.

When Larry says fine ... that is kinda a broad overstatement.

The southern shore of L.I. from the begining to end received severe water damage from the flood surge. Hicksville is about 5-7 miles north of the south shore and with a listed elevation of ~150' above sea level, so the water surge wasn't an issue.

ALL of L.I. received severe electrical outages from the high winds knocking trees down onto the power lines and taking them out - either ripping them off the houses, snapping poles, or taking down large stretches of wire from pole to pole to pole. This damage, while widespread was very localized as to how bad and how long it took (or will take) for power (and phone/internet) to be restored.

For example, I lost power 10/29 @ 5p but it was restored 10/30 @ 3a. 2 blocks from me ... they still dont have power. This will be similar in Hicksville

... and this Nor'Easter that just hit was a very heavy wet snow taking down some of the infrastructer - either for the first time or from those restored. It wasn't nearly as bad as predicted but certainly is hardest felt by those poor souls along the souther coastline of L.I. without power .. and with severly damaged houses from the water surge.

No matter where you are on L.I. - gas shortages are still a part of daily life. Why ? I do not know ...

Yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that everything was hunky-dory. People who lived on the south shore of L.I., Staten Island, and the Jersey shore are in the worse mess they can imagine. I just donated to the Red Cross, and I really feel for people who have lost everything we take for granted. Long Island is in worse shape than the city as far as power outages go. My power is largely underground, so it is less susceptible to wind and weather damage. And yes, the gas situation is nuts, and no one has explained why. You would figure the news would be all over this, but no one seems to know why. I've seen people wait in crazy lines for gas, for hours.

my friend in Hicksville said he is still out. They told him that he might not get electric back till December.

When you have to put the poles and the distribution lines back in mass, it takes a long time to get homes and businesses back on the power grid.

... and I just spoke with my sister on the border of Levittown and Hicksville - she got her power restored on Sat and lost it again last nite. They said maybe by ThanksGiving :Dou:

The Connecticut Governor is thanking the out of state power crews and sending them on their way ... SEND THEM TO LONG ISLAND !!!

John - I'll probably be going out towards Hicksville this weekend. If you want to PM me an address I can try and stop by
