How do we decode the stock carbs on our nailhead engines and where exactly on the carb are the #`s?

    Thanks

The number for the carb is on the left front base in front of the bolt hole. There are some Carter books out there, but if you have a shop manual for your car, look under the carb section and it will list all of the carb numbers and applications for your year. I hope this helps. Dan

Hi George, post the numbers you find stamped on the base, and we'll help you figure out what you have. Great panel of experts over on the Yahoo egroup too, wish we get them all over here. Sometimes the Yahoo egroup is more lively than this forum.

Well, I can definitely tell you they aren't for a 64 Buick. Anyone have a 65 book?

    Dash pot

:) George, The dash pot is there to slow the rate of closure of the throttle plates when returning to idle. They were used to keep the engine running as it decelerates and returns to idle. Hope this helps, Tim

    carter carbs

    George,

I have a '66 motors manual and it shows the folling numbers for 1965 carter AFB's : 3826S,3827S,3921S,3922S,3923S,3645S,3925S-SA,3924S-SA.
I hope that helps you, if you need some tune-up specs like float drop, choke setting, etc. I can post them if you let me know the carb number.

    Don

The NHRA engine tech site lists 3921S as the AFB carb for auto trans. GS ("400"), 401 and 425 single 4 BBL for '65 so you've probably got the original carb there.

    George,

The site I used won't give you the application for a specific carb; it list info on the engine for a specific make and year (ex.: Buick, 1965). I had printed out the page for '65 Buicks and thats where I saw that number. Anyway here's the link:

    NHRA Tech Specs

You should get the factory service manual for your car, it has more info than you could ever ask for. I got the CD ROM copy for '65s, it includes chassis and body manuals for all cars including Riv's and GS's. The only drawback is its a scanned copy of the manual, so you can't search for text or copy/paste to other apps. I can do screen dumps of the carb specs pages (about a half page at a time to be readable) and send them to you as GIF files if that helps. Email me and I'll see what I can do.

    George,
The #3922S Carb is for the Manual trans cars on the 65 GS 400, according to my Skylark Gran Sport Buick Service Manual for 1965.

    George,

You might try calling "Mitch's Carburetors" in Michigan. I have no experience with them, but they usually show up at the big midwestern swaps. He should be able to tell you what that carb is for.
