How to connect small wire to battery post?

Ok, this has to be a stupid question but I can’t find an answer to save my life. I’m installing an in-tank electric fuel pump and new gas tank. The instructions say to connect a 10 gauge wire from circuit breaker directly to the positive battery post.

Problem is the battery post is 3/4” diameter and it seems the biggest ring terminal made is only 1/2”. Any suggestions here? I have a nice spring ring positive cable terminal and don’t want to butcher it to put on a terminal end with an accessory stud.

I have generally put them on the bolt that clamps the battery terminal to the post. That is how I have my MSD and battery tender pigtail installed.

He's got the original "spring ring" style terminals, not the auto parts store bolt on style. Hmmm...interesting problem. How about connecting it to the large terminal on the starter? Or can you connect it to the back of the alternator? That 10ga wire comes right off the starter through the fusible link right?

I have an in tank EFI Pump (but running 2x4 carbs) on my '64 Skylark. I am using two relays/circuit breakers in serial for redundancy, and off an oil pressure safety switch. So, if you want details and discussion, I would be happy to talk. Just let me know and I'll give you my phone number.

You could add a junction block to the chassis and connect your battery cable to this, then run another cable to the starter. Then the junction is a power source for anything requiring high amp feed. That way, you can keep your existing spring ring battery terminal, and the other can be located out of sight to preserve appearances.

The cable from the junction to the starter can be obtained from:

One with ring lug/terminals on both ends. (The cables I ordered from them are high quality)

Then run the 10 AWG from here, through the firewall under the carpet along side the intermediate harness and then to the rear and out the the fuel pump.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I wanna keep this as simple as possible so I like the idea of running it to the starter terminal. Seems like it should work. A junction block is a nice idea too but the more complicated option....I’ll keep in mind as a future upgrade.

    Thanks for the help!

You usually just use a ring terminal with the battery terminal bolt going through it...remove the bolt, thread it through your ring terminal, reinstall the bolt into your battery cable end. Most auto parts stores will have ring terminals large enough for this, if not, a car audio section will. They're commonly used to ground up to 0-gauge cable, so the prospect of not being able to find one with a hole big enough is unlikely...

As stated the starter will work to direct hook up. Keep in mind, if you get too many wires on the starter it gets hard to get the nut tight and keep it tight.

And add on junction block or even a secondary fuse block becomes nice. Especially depending how newer circuits you might be adding. The older fuse block's don't allow for expandability much and cab easilly over load older wiring. you can get an add on fuse block cheap. I used on similar to this on my boat, allows up to 10 fused circuits, and provides a grounding block too. Plus fictions as a distribution block at the same time

Check this out for top post. I used on my spring top cables with a little modification. I cut 2 of the lugs off so you could barely see the 10ga I ran for an amp. They also make for side post.
