I'm getting ready to put new tires on two vehicles at about a grand each. It seems to me like the recent compounds don't last as long as they used to. Tires usually crack before they run out of tread. So, how old a manufacturing date would you accept on a new tire?
About 6 years is a tire’s life expectancy regardless of miles run. You can use the average miles that you drive per year to get an estimate the time you need to exhaust the mileage of the tire before it ages out.
Pro rate their Bid.... Remember you a getting bids,,, then you decide then you award the bid to who you feel made you the best offer.
I replaced the BFG T/A radials on my '72 GS that were installed in Oct 2005. The tires date code indicated that they were 3 months old. Replaced tires last year - lots of tread but starting to crack in the tire face of the fronts. maybe 30000 miles.
I replaced the tires on my truck last year and insisted no older than 4 months. A neighbor of mine bought new tires for his truck a few years before me. When I discussed how to read the DOM codes, we found out he was sold tires that were over two years old when they were put on his truck as "new". He was not happy. UticaGeoff
It's legal in Europe to sell tires up to 5 years old, stored correct, as new.. Older than that must be scrapped...
I saved 72% on the rear tires when I bought them, a couple months before they turned 5.. Has no issues, and is stored inside.. On our daily drivers, I wouldn't buy that old tires..
These are going on daily drivers, kept outside. One set I did purchase yesterday was 11th week of 2020, so 6 months old. I felt good with that.
Depends on where you live, Hot dry climates will cut the life much faster than northern cool location.
