My car doesnt have a tach, and I want one. I havent found anything I like to put in the interior. I was wondering if anyone has some pics of a hood mounted tach they'd like to post. ________ WEB SHOWS
here is a '71 GS that was on ebay a while back. I love the Lime Mist cars.... anyway, this one has a hood tach on it. My '70GS455 has a hood tach and I love it. It may not be super accurate or be in the best location for visibility (especially in the rain) but I wouldn't even consider anything else. I picked up the one from Year One and it works great.
The hood tack on my GSX only worked for about a week in the 20 years i've owned my car. I finally broke down and bought a Year One hood tack to replace it since i couldn't fix the original. The tack looks identical to the original on the outside and lights up much better at night, so I can actually see the thing. Bythe way, does anybody know of any place to buy circuit boards to fix the original hood tacks or a place that does the repairs?
I am sending my Tach to Instrument Services Inc 11765 Main St Roscoe IL 61073 800-558-2674 George on this board had them do his Buick console tach and I am sending mine out today. I guess they do clocks also.
I sent them a dash tach. Pretty slow turnaround--a couple of months. Cosmeticly, it's gorgeous. Particularly the back, which will never be seen again. Still no more accurate than before I sent it.(Reads 5500 at 4000)
I sent ISI a tach. They told me $75 to service it. When I called them back they then told me it would be over $200!!!!!! plus $17 shipping to get it back. Luckily I hadn't paid much for it, but it was working intermittently. I'd be careful with ISI.
Well, I have not sent the tach. Has anybody had a good experience with ISI or know of another rebuilder? I talked to them on the phone and the lady said there was a charge to have them look at it and give you any estimate on the rebuild cost. If you didn't want to do it there was a 25 dollar charge. I think I'll wait to see if somebody can give me some positive feed back. Thanks
I would try these guys Clock Doc 115 College Street Monteagle, TN 37356 1-931-924-8888 They do guages for Year One. I know they will rescreen guages, change clocks to quartz, and a lot of other things that are electonics. Ask for a guy named Bill. He is a really nice guy, but then again arent they all in TN. Steve BTW: pretty timely on turnaround
This tach from Year One has been working for 4 years... It's a daily driver for the whole season ... (here in Denmark it's quite cold in the winter).. -Good luck
Another Potential Source I recently purchased a hood tach that needs repair. The following is an excerpt from an email I received from R&C Tach shop regarding repair work: ************************************************ Hood Tach repairs can run from $75 to $175. I do not repair housings but do have replacement front bezels (plastic insert that sets in the front of the shell just in front of the glass). Thanks Randy Watson R&C Tach Shop 2201 Surry Rd. Jeffersonville, IN 47130 812-284-2555 ************************************************* This guy sells hood tachs from time to time on Ebay. I have only seen Pontiac tachs, but he said they are the same internally. I have never done business with this guy, so I have no idea about the quality of the service he provides. You may want to call him and ask him questions before sending your tach to him. That's what I plan to do.
More info Here's a copy of an email R&C sent me when I first inquired about converting a Pontiac tach to a Buick tach. FWIW... *********************************************** Ken I have attached a picture of a couple Buick faces one is a restored one and one is a reproduction. The top picture is for a 71-72 Buick and the bottom face is an original 70-71 face plate that is in need or restoration. Just a couple pictures to let you know that I can make the tach into what ever you want. Again outside of the face plate, the RPM/Buick Tab and the decal on the under side of the tach (base) the tachometers are the same. Thanks Randy R&C Tach Shop
Well my tach is a (year one) repro. -but it looks exactly like the original unrestored above.. By the way, the hood tach/hoodscoop on AMC's are also the same as buick/pontiacs, only with the AMC logo instead of pontiac/buick..
