I have to re-attach the long stainless trim peice that runs along the edge of the hood along the cowl on my newly painted 70 GS. The corners that complete this trim bolt to the fenders but the center part slips down on the paint. I don't want to scratch the paint up! Help!!!! :Do No:

I put several coats of wax on the edge and cleaned the inside of the chrome. Thought I had done something I had to remove it for hood repair and nothing but scratch marks. But when are you driving the car without it ,once you put it on?

True, once it's on the scratches under it probably won't matter much except they might rust. Somebody told me one time that they masked the edge with masking tape and slipped the trim over it :Do No: but it just doesn't sound like the best way to me.

Masking tape holds water so I do not think that would be any good. The scratches on my hood were light and there was no rust.

tape off the area that the trim will not be, just incase you slip. also clean out the channel on the trim, then tap it in place with a rubber hammer, if you dont get it on even you can tape up the end of a screw and tap it off, and try agine.

if it has already been buffed your probalby fine, talk to the shop, depends on the paint.

I think you are better off putting them on now. Once the paint becomes brittle it will chip easier. When it is still somewhat soft it is more forgiving. I put mine back on with the paint still a little soft and had no problems. BTW, depending on the paint, it can take several months for the paint to fully cure, so you might be waiting awhile.
