Yeah, totally bazaar. I have the 1239184 stamped in the metal and I just found a picture with that same number but as you show, the hand latch drill hole is different. I would drill a new hole, but I would at least need a correct hand latch. I don’t suppose you have one of those?

Unfortunately I have not come across one. I won’t be able to go through all my stuff until spring.

So what color do you paint the hood latch? Is it black like the support? Or is it a bare metal silver color?

The latches were cadmium gold plated or yellow zinc? You can faux paint it gold, then light mist it from a distance with a silver metallic. Or, you can have it plated.

The handle mechanism was gray phosphate.

The hood and hand latches are cleaning up nice. We’re covered in gunk. Coming out to a silver metal color. Might not need to be painted. The support probably will need to sit for a few days to get the surface rust off before painting black.

Looks like that latch will clean up well. Evaporust is good stuff!

As is acetone, a rag and some elbow grease. Mine had been painted black at some point and I feel like it almost changed the look of my engine bay once I cleaned it up.

I believe I have 70bracket with latch assembly. Both have bead blasted and self etching primed. The only piece I don't have is pull rod.Let me know if interested.

Thanks, I managed to find one from a 70 Skylark. That’s what I’m cleaning up now. I had my (what I thought to be correct) one bead blasted and primered only to find out it’s 71-72 style. Figured this time I’d try the evaporust route and save some cash. It’s good stuff but you need a big enough bin to fit parts. Oh yeah, lots of patience which I don’t have. Gotta let it soak for a few days then flip it over in the bucket and wait some more. :)

I would highly not recommend leaving them in there for days especially the springs I would remove those immediately . It’s the only thing the evapo will hurt I’ve found . They will crumble in your hand .

IF your not Plating the latch use a preservative so it dosen’t flash rust quickly .

Thanks for the heads up! Just pulled the latches out and you are correct. The spring on the hand latch broke in half and in the bottom if the bucket. It was only in there since 7pm Thursday. Guess it was almost two days. The springs are on the hood latch are still good.

You’re welcome . I keep extra restored latch springs in stock for plating customers . But , I don’t have any extra of the pivot latch springs .

No worries. I can take a spring off the 71 latch I have. Do you think the evaporust took off the phosphate (or whatever was on it) plating that was on the latch?
