Hood latch support - is there a difference between P/N 1239183 and 1239184?

The black support came off my 70 GS (which is a little bent at the bottom) and has part number 1239183.
The teal blue support has part number 1239184 which searching shows its for the 71-72 model years.

Can the 71-72 version (1239184) latch support bracket be used on a 70 GS?

Only differences I can actual see is in the actual latch mechanism. The base plates appear to be the same. Which makes me think I can take the latch from my 70 and put in on the 71 support bracket.

    Thoughts?

I think the release mechanism holes are in different places.

Latches are the same and or will interchange, all the supports pictured are 71/2 even the one that came off you car, the 70 has staggered mounting holes and a completely different transmission assembly

Cool, thanks. Looks like I can still use the support and latch mechanism but just need to find a new bottom mechanism for the release the mounting holes look the same, just the bottom piece has a longer arm and a slightly rotated mechanism. Looks like I got some searching to do.

I know my car was wrecked at some point by the previous owner, but didn’t know how bad it was until I started tearing it down. I would love to try and find the previous owner but don’t know how.

The mounting holes are different and I believe iirc the support is shaped differently to accommodate the latch transmission, I'm sure it can be made to work if you drill new holes tho

The only thing that is the same between 70 and 71-72 is the hood latch itself and the pull handle.

The support piece, lower piece (where the handle attaches), and the rod going from the latch assembly to the lower piece are all either for a 70 or for a 71-72, They do not interchange.

Duane, the 70 pull handles I have found were bigger than 71-72? You can see the difference in his pictures.

BrunoD: If you have some parts that would help me to get to the correct setup, let me know. It sounds like the actual support bracket and the upper latch are the same. I could just install a new lower latch pull mechanism and the connecting rod. Is that correct? Would you have those available? Thanks!

The support bracket is different. The only thing you can use off the set-up you posted is the latch assembly.

The upper grill mounting holes are in different places on the supports.

Yep. Welcome to the Buick World.

PS. To answer your original question, if GM changed the part number then it is a different part. Sometimes you can interchange the pieces, but it still would be a different part.

Your part numbers are not at all what I have found. I have two 1970 supports and both have 1231400 stamped in them. I also have a bunch of 71’s and they have part number 1235119 stamped in them. These numbers are tough to come by unless you have pieces in hand. The assembly manual does you no good as it has an assembly number not the stamping. My parts book shows assembly numbers as well.
