High oil pressure - potential causes? Harmful?

    Hi, all:

1969 GS400 - I had an oil change done by my usual shop and noticed that upon starting, it seemed to take a a second or two longer for the oil pressure gauge to move, plus there was a momentary light knock. OK, maybe they used an odd grade oil - replaced it with 10W30 and while it sounds fine, oil pressure is ~50 at idle (usually it's at about 10 for each 1000 rpm). Anybody run into this before and, if so, what the heck is this about?

Only other thing I noticed is that the oil pan itself is mildly dented right at where the drain bolt is.

Any help or insight greatly appreciated!

Did they use the same filter as always?

It seemed a usual brand (not Fram), I replaced it with a Wix filter just to be sure.

So you are saying your oil pressure is 50 psi at idle after you have driven the car on the highway for 20 minutes?

50 psi at idle is totally normally with cold oil. As Larry said, was this initial start up or after getting everything up to operating temp?

Good to know that 50 psi is normal - this was at startup, usually hovers about 15-20 psi while on fast idle then drops down. I'll drive it for a while and see what, if anything, happens. Part of the tough thing about this hobby is figuring out what's 'normal' and what isn't - the help is greatly appreciated!

If it was 15-20 psi at cold start up at fast idle, I would be very worried:). My cold start up pressure is more like 70 psi at about 1200 RPM.
