Great looking Corvair Rampside. Buick 300's are good little engines. I have been told the manifold and heads are unique to one another. In other words, without some sort of adapters a 300 aluminum head has to have a 300 aluminum manifold. They are not interchangeable with iron heads & manifolds. Keep us posted on your progress.

I just picked up a '67 300 2bbl. Great choice for an engine to go in an MGB. It can be made to fit under the hood with no bubble or scoop and is nearly indistinguishable from the Rover engines that the factory used (Buick 215). One of the biggest engines that will easily fit, it is a drop-in swap in the later rubber bumper cars and much more reliable than any of the Rovers or 215s. There is a weight penalty of course. With the aluminum heads and intake it is 50lbs heavier than the OEM 4 cylinder. Iron heads add another 52.5 lbs but also give you the biggest ports and valves in any engine of that series, Rover or Buick.

CR is 9:1 which really isn't bad. While the 4bbl is better at 10.25:1 the 2bbl engine is an excellent choice for a blower. Of interest, If you swap in a set of TA Rover heads the CR goes up to about 11.3:1 with a .040" head gasket and with aluminum heads that's tolerable. They also are fairly easy to stroke up to 340/350 CID.

The main thing to look for when buying aluminum heads is electrolysis damage. This can occur where aluminum meets the cast iron block mostly around the cooling passages.

I have a complete 64 300 engine, with aluminum heads and intake, that I will sell all or part of, it has a 2 barrel carb. As Jim mentioned above, 4 barrel engine has 10.25 compression ratio which may not work well with the low octane fuel in Germany. I was stationed at Rhein Main Air Base 76 to 78.

Our lowest Octane is 95, than 98 and 100 / 102 gas. But in 95 and 98 octane is 5% ethanol. Our lowest octane in the past was 87.

This is a better solution how to integrate a V8 in a Corvair. They used the original drive train / trans axle.

Wow, things have really changed, there was octane in the low 80s when I was there. Are they calculating it the same?

Yes they are. When the gas had lead in we had "Normal" gas. We didn't have it today and we got two new more higher rated fuels. The octane of Super was lower in the past.

I thought you mean here in germany from the past to today.
In Germany we use the ROZ as octane, the USA use a arithmetic addition of ROZ and MOZ, so in the USA the octane rating is around 5 digits lower.
Our 95 octane rating is 90 octane in the USA.

So we picked up the 1964 Buick engine with trans in Bavaria. It was great to see many friends and Club brothers when we was there for two days.

Ready for disassemble. After cleaning and maybe some porting the heads and intake will go on the engine in the Corvair.

Bavaria is truly a lovely area. It is so far north in latitude that my guess is the trees may have already lost their leaves. I remember being there in late May one year and seeing snow. We will be back in 2019 for a trip along the Danube River into Hungary.

There was a little bit snow in the mountains two weeks ago, but now it is too warm there for snow. Many trees still have there leaves. We had cloudy weather and short periods of rain, not the best weather for the trip but it was ok.

What's that have to do with the sbb 300 he is working on?

The number 1 cylinder is, when facing the front of engine the #1 cylinder is the front one on the right.

An Nailhead engine would be the opposite of the sbb 300.
