Yes when I set it, I put the yellow springs in.
then I blocked the VA on the carb and on the distributor.
Did the whole timing thing, set it at 32, when line stops going up.

I'll have to check that one over the weekend. put the yellow springs back on and then rev with VA reconnected and see where I am.
    thanks!

would going up to 34 on the timing make any difference?

You don't need to put the yellow springs back in. Once you set the maximum (total) timing to 32*, that is where it is set. When you reconnect the vacuum advance, the timing should immediately advance even at idle if it is connected to manifold vacuum. If you have the timing light connected, it will be very obvious. The mark will move immediately as you connect the VA up to manifold vacuum. The VA advances the timing beyond the initial +mechanical advance. At light load and small throttle angles, the engine can tolerate more timing for better gas mileage. Low 40's is usually best. At WOT, engine vacuum drops to 0. The vacuum advance has a spring inside that OPPOSES engine vacuum. In order for the VA to add timing, engine vacuum must overcome that spring. When you go WOT and vacuum drops to 0, the spring pulls whatever VA timing there was out. Verify that the VA canister is working.
