Has anyone tried to install a factory large body HEI in a GS? I just put a 425 in my '64 Skylark and I would like to run an HEI but it appears the there might not be enough firewall clearance. It looks close and I would like to know before I order one and then find out it doesn't fit. Not against tapping the firewall a little bit. Any other ignitions that might be as good or better?
I have the MSD Pro Billet distributors on my 401 and 425. I need to check but I might have a used one I can sell if interested.
Thanks Jim. I'm just starting my research but yes, I would be interested. Nothing wrong with used if it's in V. good condition. I don't know much about MSD except that it's good stuff. Some friends do though so not worried. How much? I'm in Minneapolis, so not far away.
As far as I'm concerned there's nothing wrong with the stock "Nail" dist. Upgrade it to electronic via a variety of choices & have it re-curved properly & you'll be good to go. Unless of course if you are drag racing & need all the power you can get from an ignition system. Just my thoughts. Tom T.
I did it because availability of parts at any auto parts store. My pertronics failed and couldn't get parts right away. I have pertronics in my 61 Olds too.
You can have the stock distributor modified to accept HEI components. http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/
Is Dave still around and doing these? I got one of the last ones from him several years ago before he almost got killed interrupting a robbery. It works fine and is in the T bucket on my profile pic. I haven't tried to connect with him for a long time. Thought he quit doing it. HMMM.
