got my new HEI for my 455. old distributor gone, coil gone. i just need 12v constant on key switch to the new HEi correct?. the stock wiring is a mess so i'm going to have to go through and see whats missing or what goes where
I did that. This allows you to run a larger gauge wire to the HEI which reduces any voltage drop due to a high load. Not sure I will ever need that but a higher compression motor might. Nice project! I come off the battery through a 30 amp fuse and trigger the relay using the extra wiper pigtail. The only issue I had was that the car would not shut off due to feedback through the voltage regulator. I solved that by using a diode on the brown wire. Runs great. See pics :
Before I added an aftermarket wiring harness I used the original resistor wire to activate a relay that was connected to the battery. If you go with a relay make the sure the activation wire provides juice during cranking.
Now you need to toss that external regulator and your alternator and upgrade to the internal regulater alternator. That will lead to your next upgrade of choice. I would upgrade the hell out of everything ! BuTT just dont skimp on the connecting rods. AND please make sure you have gravey, as long as you have gravy, everything else is OOOOk
