Guess I put the car away before I really ever drove it.

Well after much work to this point to get a "new" to me 200 4r in my 66 Special, I've got to pull it in the garage and cover it up. Hoping that maybe next year I can get it drivable. Put in a 200 4r that I was told had been rebuilt before I bought it, and it didn't shift right. Took it to a reputable trans shop that I've used in the past and they said it was shot. Quoted me $1750 to rebuild and set it up correctly. I don't have that kind of scratch right now. So I'll put it away and hopefully try again next year. If anyone is going to Frankenmuth I'll be the guy pushing a stroller around with a Buick hat on. Say hi and laugh at me. I'm seriously disappointed right now.

I paid 600 to get mine done. I told the guy I wanted it to be able to handle a 455. It's been about 8- or so Years ago and it's still holding up. But I put a 350 in front of it instead of a 455. Too much BS to go through to put a 455 in. This is my Convert I'm talking about. I'm in Linden South of Flint. Where are You?

Just curious, what kind of shift issues? maybe we can help out. My issue was that is shifted far too early. Trimmed the weights on the governor and it's much better. Might even take it down further.

I also paid 625 for a "hardened" rebuild.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

I hope that $1750 price came with a kiss and some cuddling after.

I knew $1750 was way too much. Especially when i can get a Monster trans for about $1300 shipped. I've got no problem installing it myself, however he said the geometry for the detent cable was all wrong. That's the part that would give me fits. And right now I just don't have anymore cash to spend on the car right now. As for the problems the trans was having, it slid into 2nd. No a crisp shift at all. And I don't think it ever shifted into 4th.

TexasT Texas, where are you from

I hate to hear you are having difficulties. First let me ask a couple questions. I understand the budget aspect and will try to help get you where you want to be with a little less coin than quoted.
First question. You say you can get the trans in and out, are you willing to do some reading and try a diy overhaul? To me the hardest part is getting it in and out.
If so get a copy of the ck manual. It isn't the be all end all but it is an excellent resource. It is chocked full of tech and how to. Worth the $65.

The tv cable is the lifeline to the trans. It must be setup correctly or your trans will not perform or last long.
The setup is outlined at tvmadeez.com head over there and do some reading.

    I sent you a pm.

Fwiw, the last powerglide I built for a customer was over 1200 dollars in parts. If it only needs clutches 600-800 doesnt sound far off. but if you need to start changing hard parts, valve body, pump, etc. that stuff costs a lot. might want to find out what was in the itemized quote before burning someone at the stake

Thanks for all the info guys. This was a one shot deal for me, if the trans was good then we were gonna take the car to Frankenmuth and cruise the Autofest. The trans turned out to be garbage, so the car stays parked in the garage for another year. I blew what I had to spend on a junk transmission. That's it, no more scratch to rebuild, buy a new one, go to this shop or that shop. I have a 7 month old son and wanted to be able to say we cruised his first Autofest. Priorities dictate that there is no more money. Like I said I will try to build a bigger budget and try again next year.

Any reason the old tranny cannot go back in to at least drive/enjoy the car? I am with the others on this as far as rebuilding it yourself. Buy the book for direction and take your time. I have seen friends rebuild their own trannies on plywood in the driveway and have no issues. Taking your time, laying out your parts in order of removal and keeping everything clean is the most important thing.

The old trans was slipping badly. Still have the ST 300, but hasn't been in car since I've owned it. So I have no idea if it is good or not.

Maybe a little overkill for a stock 66 Skylark.:Do No:

Only just the transbrake part. i wouldn't build a glide with anything less than that list other than the pump. but i get what you're saying. i dont have any experience with the 200r though. they might think it needs better hard parts to work with any good v8?

It's just a cruiser, I don't race it. I don't even try burn outs. The most I've done with it is get on it on the freeway. And, not super hard either. I just want to cruise with my now 7 month old son in the back, I love seeing little people with their parents in older cars. Wanted my son to experience it too.

A 3 speed TH350 would be a cheap and easy swap. You'll need one with a BOP bellhousing pattern, chev is different. You'll need the TH350 converter too.

Sticking with the 4 speed, plan to drive some distance. Frankenmuth is about 4 hours from where I live, so I think the extra gear would make sense.
